Burns and Scalds on Prednisolone

Has anyone else noticed that minor burns and scalds seem worse with pred? I splashed myself cracking an egg into the frying pan and almost a week later I still have an ugly scab that looks like a rodent ulcer, very sore too, but thankfully not infected. I wonder if it's the thin skin that intensifies the degree of the burn.

Yes for sure......it’s less pliable and resilient on Pred. You need to treat it with extra care.....something we sometimes forget.

I am sure you are right on all counts! Take great care. X

I bleed more profusely. I cut my finger, a small cut, on a box and it was all over both hands before I found a bandage.

I was amazed how well my thigh recovered, after, recently, scalding both legs, when I dropped a mug of hot black coffee over myself. Rang 111.Did you put cold water on the area for 20 mins? There is no scarring on left thigh, and, only a small mark on right . Have been on Pred for GCA, 13 years.

Yes, had a few small burns which take ages to heal and leave a scar. Always flush the burn or scald with plenty of cold water immediately.

Everything takes longer to heal. However I have noticed I don't react to insect bites anymore. Used to come up in big red patches now hardly notice them.

Pred likely dousing inflammatory effects of insect bites?

Pred has had no effect on my insect bites, got 3 massives angry red ones in the summer, just like pre-pred ones :(

Oh I hope that's the case for me, normally horse fly bites and mosquito bites create massive swellings up tp 10cm at times and nasty weeping ulcerated sores. I've been dreading early summer, but maybe I'll escape. Got diagnosed July, after the breeding season for the little B*ggers.

Yes. Skin is a huge problem on steroids. It is our largest organ and very sensitive.

I was quite shocked while on high dose steroids at just how easy it was to injure the skin. Even hand washing created blisters. I bought some heavy duty rubber gloves and made sure that I wore them, they were a great help.

That is interesting. I have had some really large blisters on my legs caused by bruises. My doctor says it is thin skin caused by pred. Were your blisters just on your hands?

No, I had them on my feet as well, the heels and the soles. I had to wear the softest flips flops for a while. Luckily it was in the Summer.

One of mine on my calf was eight inches long so it may not have fitted onto my foot!

That's sounds very painful. The blisters I had were all caused by friction and there were no bruises. The bruises I did get did not turn into blisters.

It is obviously a different sort of blister we are having, I wonder if they are both due to pred. I have been having mine dressed now for over a year, not the same one but the new ones that keep happening. I am just hoping this week will be my last visit to the nurse fingers crossed.

Do you know what has caused your blisters? As I said my hands blistered just wringing out some hand washing.

I've had numerous bruises but no blisters with them.

Sorry piglette I've just checked your message and you've been suffering with these blisters for over a year.

Are they sure that you have blisters and not something else. You poor soul.

They are definitely blisters, I think caused by bruising. They are filled with a clear sort of fluid if burst.

Essential Oil of Lavender is brilliant for healing burns etc just keep applying and gently rubbing in. If applied early enough and repeatedly can prevent the blistering and toughen up the new skin underneath before the burnt skins fall away. I always have Lavender Oil in my kitchen, handbag and beside my bed. Few drops on pillow can aid sleeping - would n't be without it.

Nor I sennetta - multiple uses in my household. Apparently there was always a bowl of lavender oil in every French Blacksmith's forge into which burnt hands were plunged ensuring quick, no-blister, no-scar healing. I wouldn't be without it.

I grow an aloe Vera plant in the kitchen. It is great for the odd burns from the cooker etc.

You can't beat Aloe Vera gel (organic) for burns... it really, really helps

But only ever if the skin is not broken - if the skin is damaged to that extent you need professional care. Don;t put anything on it - above all, none of the household remedies such as butter ...
