Morning to you Rimmy...thanks for posting the link to the Guardian article. I have read many such articles as I have experienced issues with a mesh implant fitted in September 2016. In fact, as I write to you this morning I am in moderate pain from the site of the implant. I am really one of the lucky ones as there are many horror stories regarding the damage caused from the mesh shrinking, hardening & eroding. In some cases the damage isn't apparent until many years after being fitted.
I have had ME/CFS for many years and although my implant was correctly fitted my body decided to be "irrittated" by the intrusion and, as such, mounted an inflammatory response. This caused my ME/CFS symptoms to become more acute but it is believed (by Endo & Gyno) that is has also resulted in me developing PMR.
A few weeks ago following a visit to my GP for help with trying to bring my first PMR flare under control I happened to mention a couple of other symptoms that I had. Fast forward a few weeks after various tests etc...and I am due to have surgery next Tuesday to remove a Mirena coil that was found to be embedded in the wall of my uterus. It appears I am also having a foreign body rejection to the embedded coil which is also adding to my inflammatory levels.
I am hopeful that the removal of at least one the offending and unwelcome intruders that I might start to feel a little brighter and be able to better manage and control the PMR symptoms.
So, Rimmy, it's a long answer to your point but I think there is irrefutable proof that many woment have developed AI illness - RA, Fybromyalgia, ME/CFS, PMR and so on...following what was thought to be a simple "quick fix" for a very common problem!

I hope one day soon, my gyno, rheumi or someone will at least admit to the possibility that my mesh implant may have caused the AI. For now, I've been brushed off about it... Maybe now that it is actually coming out of my body spontaneously, theyll listen...My OH has already implied that anyone I go to see about it will think I'm just paranoid as it is all over the news. It IS rather funny timing but it's because I've been aware that something was wrong but put it on the back burner... Never would ha e thought it had caused the supposed PMR or the sjogrens in fact, I was having pain while sitting, like something was pricking me and I had thought it was due to vaginal dryness caused by the sjogrens.
The Spanish Minister of Health commented yesterday at a press conference that problems with the mesh were "anecdotal"! I was livid! I remember a couple of months ago, the Australian president publicly apologized to all the mesh victims, and here it's "anecdotal" 😤
- Suggest printing off sections of the report together with the website, and taking to your medical team. It is a disgrace. Also, could band with other women in your society who are in a similar situation, get a petition going, make a stink about this state of affairs, also, push to get the wretched thing out of your body.
There is much about all of this in one of our newspapers, Le Monde. Yesterday and today, 4-page spreads on the full subject of 'Implants', from mesh to hips, to knees, to stents - heart and otherwise. lemonde.fr/sante/ - also published in English. Scroll down, many items on Implants and evidence including that doctors are now concerned for the safety of their patients, but government is trying the bluff and cover game. Ho-Hum. This all harks back to the lobbyists and 'trade' agreements ! Comes down to corruption and the bottom-line.
Journalists from 39 countries have got together to unearth the hidden dangers of the implants, most of which have been but poorly trialed (!!) and, information as to their material = undisclosed use of nickel etc. Let alone the appalling scandal of the PIP breast implants, provided by Servier, using foam upholstery material ! Servier had the book thrown at him, but, he was not jailed. He died a couple of years ago. An abomination and a disgrace to France.
It is a very bad scene. Makes one really nervous of undergoing implant surgery.
Tip. IF you know you are allergic to nickel then openly state this fact. IF unsure, then *demand the metal allergy test. Do your homework and take care.
I guess Europe has been stamping the € approval sign on just about anything. A TV show here in Spain, that investigates and denounces all sorts of malpractice, took in a mesh bag for oranges to be approved for implants and apparently it got approved.
I will get the mesh out no matter what... I'm not alergic to any metals but I believe my mesh is plastic, they are telling us not to use plastic to serve or conserve food, how can they think plastic inside the body is benign..
I am heartily of the opinion that a lot of quick fixes are not at all - merely quick bucks for the manufacturer.
Hi Rimmy, I had a mesh implant for rectocele in 2008. It wasn't perfect, made sex very painful but by then, it really wasn't an issue, due to personal circumstances. But as the mesh scandal has hit the Spanish headlines finally, I decides to check my mesh out. I would not be able to get a tampon in, as there is a block which feels like a rock!
I never had any autoimmune problems before the mesh, no one in my family either. So you are probably right.
It is appalling that women have been treated with such negligence and outright exploitation ... I really feel for all those involved and hope anyone here who is suffering due to these implants can get things 'rectified' as much as is possible asap and ultimately the compensation they deserve !!
