Cataract complication - YAG laser capsulotomy

Hello all!

I know there are several of us who had cataract surgery due to prednisone. In my case they showed up and progressed so quickly they had to be removed less than a year after initially developing. It was shocking when I could not drive at night due to them so I was thrilled when I had an amazing result from my cataract surgery. I ended up with better than 20:20 with no correction, no need for glasses or contacts for distance. It was stunning. About a month later at my final checkup appointment it was discovered that I had a PCO in my left eye. I knew something was wrong because the prefect vision I had, began to degrade in my left eye justweeks after surgery while the right eye stayed perfect. I knew there was a risk for this before the cataract surgery and I also knew I was at an increased risk because I am younger than most who have the surgery and for some reason that predisposed me to the PCO. The YAG laser capsulotomy is not a huge deal, done in the doctor’s office and I remember some of you had it done. What I want to know is if it did any damage to your IOL or change your vision again. My doctor wants me to wait 5-6 months to do the YAG laser capsulotomy to avoid disturbing the IOL. I’d appreciate hearing anyone’s experiences with the YAG laser capsulotomy. Thanks!

What is IOL? I had the capsule lasered off a few weeks ago and it was nothing just took seconds and then fabulous vision again! Just as good as before and easy as anything. Xxxxxx

The IOL is the inter ocular lens that they put in when you have the cataract surgery. I literally had incredible vision the day after both of the surgeries and I wanted to make sure the implanted lenses wasn’t affected. 😊

Thanks so much! That’s wonderful to hear 💕

Oh wow Nitrobunny, that is a bummer! I wish you all the bast and hope they get you sorted out sooner rather than later! This is timely as my cataracts are progressing rapidly and I'm, looking at surgery perhaps early next year, if they continue at same rate... Keep us informed of your progress. xxx . Good luck!

Thanks! I’m pretty much in a holding pattern right now as it takes a good three or more months for the scar tissue to bind well to the implanted lens making it more stable for the YAG laser procedure. I’m just thankful the cataract surgery went so well. The results were stunning. I’m looking forward to getting that beautiful vision back early next year.

It sounds as if you and I were in the same boat with cataracts that developed so quickly. It was shocking as I have enjoyed very good vision my whole life when out of no where my night vision was so compromised I could not drive. It’s nice to know cataracts can be treated despite the occasional bump in the road and need for an extra procedure.

Wishing you the best~

I think it was 71 days where I went from "you may be developing a cataract," to having very blurred vision and being told, " you have a cataract that has developed very quickly.😳 . Your eyeglass prescription has changed drastically!"
