I suffered PMR 5 years ago and have been PMR and steroid free for 2 years. Over last 2 weeks I have had gradually increasing hip pain until today when the pain became very intense. Does anyone know if this is a more focused PMR symptom? Before my previous symptoms were more overall muscle ache and loss of muscle use. I would be grateful of any advise.
Is my hip pain a symptom of PMR: I suffered PMR... - PMRGCAuk
Difficult to say from such a vague description of hip pain - but what about trochanteric bursitis? It can be part of PMR but PMR itself tends to be bilateral and affectign muscles too. But everything starts somewhere.
Hi. Just googled T. Bursitis, don't think its that as there is no swelling. Hard to be more descriptive of pain other than that its through the left hip joint and seems to be spreading today to the base of my spine.
I have no swelling with trochanteric bursitis - just pain down the outside of my thigh and into the groin..
Is it muscular?
Hi. No, it feels as if its right in the joint and now also in the tip of the spine. I have been looking online and hip pain apparently is common to PMR, hence my post on this forum. Thanks for your help.
Yes - often due to trochanteric bursitis which can be part of PMR. The feeling deep in the hip joint tends to be when it has spread to the iliopsoas bursa.
I think you do need an x-ray to rule out other things - though it couldn;' say then it was definitely bursitis. But the position of the pain towards the coccyx seems strange.
Could be facet syndrome; the nerves exiting the vertebrae become inflamed and refer pain to one or both hips. I was treated for this in 2009 with high radio frequency cold ablation; done under local anesthesia; worked like magic . It destroys those nerve endings; unfortunately, it only solves the problem for a few months because the nerve endings grow back. I may not have the name of the procedure quite right, but almost right.
Just a thought
Thanks Christophene. I shall mention this to my GP.
I finally had my appointment two days ago. After an examination, the doctor thought I had arthritis. So have applied for physio on her advice, but this has a very long wait. I'll probably have to book another Gp appointment before then.
What SORT of arthritis? And how bad? All it needs is an x-ray to see...
I'm afraid the GP didn't say and not being quick thinking I forgot to ask. The pain is somewhat better but is worse first thing in the morning. Hence my original post on here querying a return of PMR.
Everyone on this post has been very helpful. I think I shall try and insist on an x-ray if the pain gets as bad as it was.
It sounds arthritic to me. I would be asking for an X Ray. Good luck!
Thanks for advice Jane. Will be booking a doctor appointment if it does not dissipate.
That was exactly where my pain started so possibly. Thought mine was arthritic but scan confirmed not.
Just waiting for results of Dexa scan so a doctors app looks the best course.
I was just thinking the same thing as I am reducing from 5 mgs to 4mgs and am having terrible aching in my lower back & hip and am wondering if this is the start of a flare xx
Hope not Pammy. I remember how hard it was to get the prednisolone down to zero. I really don't want to go back on steroids so taking it easy. Not walking dogs even.
I have had T. bursitis for last 3 years it is agony, pain goes right through from one hip to the other.Turning in bed is very painful to.I have had PMR for nearly 5 years.I do hope you get to the bottom of it.x
I have left hip pain and lower back mostly every day. along with feeling exhausted. my blood work came back good 3.4 and CRP was 3.2 my Doctor was on pred till about 7weeks ago... went to dr yesterday and scratching his head thinking maybe not PMR cause my wrists are very arthritic feeling also.. sent me for series of xrays, neck, hips, wrists, hands, etc.. and more blood work to rule out i guess bone deterioration .. not sure he knows what to do..
Soooo im wondering is this my new normal? some days i feel better but the last 2 i felt like i hit a wall.. the week before i felt GREAT.. uggg
Following as that seems similar to my story. I thought I was over PMR.
Update. Chiropractor found I had sky-high blood pressure. The hip pain improved after the first treatments. First blood pressure pills (Amlodipine) bought pain back in the hip and also in ankles, knees, neck. Now on Ramipril and all side effects have gone - so has the worst of the hip pain. Going for hip x-ray next week. I'm inclined to think its nor PMR now. Apart from the hip pain the whole thing is really annoying as I suffer from restless legs too.
Don't like old age, I'm used to walking miles with our dog!
