The Loss Of A Pet

My best friend, Joey is out of her pain and misery. I put her down yesterday and my grief is immeasurable. The hole in my heart can’t be filled. PMR, retirement and the ups and downs of life were always soothed by petting her, talking to her and walking her in her stroller. Her blindness gave her an extra dose of compassion.

So sorry to hear of your loss Sandy. I know that pain well & it will take a little time for it to ease. Joey will live on in your heart & memories like Pepper does in mine. Please be extra kind to yourself. Wishing you all the best.

Thanks for your kind words. I’m trying to do things to help. Got a new car yesterday and the experience was flat. I am grateful for my blessings but missing Joey creeps into everything.

I am so sorry Sandy1947. I really appreciate what you are going through as it has just happened to me.

Please look after yourself as my little dog dying as caused me to have a flare.

I posted on here yesterday and had some lovely replies which made me feel as if someone understands. Perhaps you could find me under the username Attic and have a look.

Take care, thinking of you, Jenny xx

Jenny thanks for the warning about a flare. I have a slight sore throat from getting up with Joey several times a night for the last couple of months. I appreciate your kind thoughts.

I am so sorry for you. It is heartbreaking when you have to say good bye to an animal you love so much. I don’t work and my dog is my life and really keeps me going. So I do understand my heart goes out to you. Sending hugs your way x

Oh Sandy, how heartbroken you must be missing your sweet pup. Our pets enrich our lives and provide joy and companionship in ways that humans can’t.

My daschund Oscar helped me through some of my most difficult times.

Your love and compassion is evident and you can take solace in the fact that you loved and cared for her right until the end.

You will surely be sad and miss her, which demonstrates the connection you two had.

Do take care of yourself during the grieving process. Hopefully time will lesson your pain. My thoughts are with you during this most difficult time.

I remember when our old cat was put down a few years ago. I wasn't there. My husband had taken her to the vet and she was put to sleep then and there. When we buried her in the back garden I remember looking down on her furry little body curled up and was overwhelmed with gratitude to her for spending her life with me.

I look at pictures of her over the years and smile with joy! We must be grateful for the unconditional love.

Sandy1947,

I am very sorry for your loss. I still think about my Frisky, a friend for 18 years. We had her a very long time but that does not make it easier. Time helps but it is still tough, but you will get through this.

Hi Sandy, I can relate to your sense of loss. Me and My Mrs. have had a dog of one breed or another over the last 50 yrs, Some have been born with odd misfunctions, the last one was an English Springer. He had cancer at the age of 14. It was soul wrenching to watch him go to sleep , now we have rescued cats. getting to old for all that emotional strain with a dog.

Sandy1947 profile image

Emotional strain speaks to what happens when I open the door and stillness greets me.

I thought my heart would never mend when I lost my Golden Retriever Jack. Writing this, three years on , I realise it still hasn't. The lifetime bond we form with our pets is exactly that. A dog's only fault, if they have one, is that they are not with us long enough.

My foot seems to have gone to sleep. there's the "dead weight" of a young retriever called murphy sleeping on it. He's snoring loudly and I think I can still smell that dirty pond water he insisted on swimming in yesterday.

He doesn't look on himself as anyone's replacement. Neither do I. We are just inseparable friends.

Sandy1947 profile image

I love learning about Jack and Murphy. Inseparable friends describes Joey and me, too.

Dear Sandy, sending you all my love and sympathy for the loss of your dearest Joey, I know and many of us on here can sympathise with how you much feel. Losing our pet is one of the hardest things. When I lost my little boy cat suddenly it was like my heart was broken in pieces. Be kind to yourself and grieve, the loss is deeper than we know. Wrapping love and peace around you today.

~Extra special thoughts Sandy from one animal lover to another - they are like our children who love us unconditionally.

You had an unselfish brave heart (albeit breaking) for putting Joey to rest when you did.

Our Miss Minky ( cat in pic) was adopted fairly soon after our beautiful young Truffles was killed. I just can't live without a furry baby.

Abundant blessings & heartfelt sympathy ~

HI Sandy:

I know how painful this is for you. It's very hard to let our loved ones go. But there's a point where it is the right thing to do.

I hope you'll consider a rescue to bring a new friend into your good, kind and loving home. All kinds of living beings need to give and receive love, especially those of us who have lived past our "cute" stage.

Joey would approve.

Hugs and caring thoughts are welcome at this difficult time.

As a dog owner for more than 35 years, let me offer my sympathy.

Throughout the years and the many "slings and arrows..." in my life, my dogs have been steadfast and I understand the pain of loss you are feeling.

Darling Sandy I’m so sorry and if only I could say anything to ease the pain. As I wrote last week, I had to get medical help when my very ill three year old chihuahua died of liver failure. It was devastating. Your Joey looks like the sweetest little darling. The gap that they leave is huge. I PROMISE you ( and I never promise lightly) it does ease. It becomes a manageable pain. I am sending you a huge hug and much love cxxx

So sorry. Like many of those who have replied to you, I've also lost pets and know the heartbreak it brings. When it is not quite so raw for you, you will be able to remember the joy Joey brought to you too. He had a lovely life and was obviously well loved and cared for. Big but gentle hugs 🤗

Sandy,

So sorry for your loss.

I, too, have a Bichon. We adopted him last year after his owner passed away. He’s now 14 and having some issues. I sleep some nights on the couch with him as hubby says no pets allowed in the bedroom. Makes my PMR symptoms more noticeable in the AM, but I enjoy the snuggle time with the little fluff ball.

I think your idea of walking dogs at the rescue place when you are ready is a good idea.

One step at a time.

Did you read the book “Heaven is for Real”? It was based on a true story. If I Remember correctly, the little boy stated that pets were up there, too! I hope that’s true!

A hug to you from upstate NY.

I’m so sorry and I’m still thinking of you and your beloved Joey. I know she is right there in your heart, in that place where your love for her lives, right now, looking up at you and wagging her tail whenever you look down towards her, and she’s always with you, all the time. Maybe she curls up in there and sleeps when you look away and do other things, and when you look down towards her...there she is, safe and happy in your heart... ❤️
