Literally it seems, 4 fillings/bits of tooth have fallen out in the last few months. Is is just bad luck or linked to steroids or the alendronic acid I was taking for 2 years? What ever it’s an expensive time!
Falling to bits: Literally it seems, 4 fillings... - PMRGCAuk
Falling to bits
Hi,
May be the AA, there is always a worry with that and teeth, well jaw actually!
However I was on it for 4 years and no apparent problems, so it could just be coincidence especially if fillings are old.
But as you say, expensive!
You are not alone! I have lost 4 teeth due to infection. Antibiotics have been unable to save the teeth. I had Zolendronate infusions for 3 years.
Celtic had similar problems at one time while still on pred - wasn't AA though. The main problems with AA is regrowth of bone in the jaw rather than affecting the teeth themselves which is what would make a mess of fillings. Maybe it is just anno domini - you know, like all your electric devices tend to die at the same time!
Trouble is they were not designed to last this long, people are living much longer now. I expect like me you had good use of them!
My teeth always seem to go in groups - very expensive.
I have had to have two fillings replaced, a root canal and two teeth extracted which had just dissolved and couldn't be fixed. I think it's related to the pred as I was only on the Alendronic acid for about 6 months.
Yes, my teeth have been pretty rubbish over the last couple of years with bits falling off them, bits of teeth and old fillings. I think , as someone has said, I rather have put it down to the age of the fillings , well, and the teeth come to that. It always seemed no sooner had I gone to see the dentist about one tooth, a few days later another would have a bit fall off. That has happened quite a few times. It hasn’t occurred to me to ascribe it to the Pred, but possibly that hasn’t helped. I only took a months worth of AA, so can’t blame that, and the reason I stopped that was because of bits falling off my teeth anyway.
Somewhere I read, but unfortunately was never able to find a reliable reference for the statement, that Vitamin K2 (not K1) actually helps teeth. If true I suppose it's because it helps with the density of the jawbone by making sure calcium actually gets into the bones, and this would help stabilize the teeth. I can only attest to the fact that my sensitive teeth are no longer as sensitive, barely at all, actually, since I've been taking a significant dose of K2 for several years. I found I needed 200 mcg per day as when I reduced to 100 mcg the sensitivity developed again. Also, even before pred, I'd felt my teeth were moving in my mouth and was told that was quite common with age. I no longer feel this loosening effect. Like anything to do with bones it takes a while for the benefit to be felt, but as the jaw seems particularly vulnerable to bone thinning I think it is also an area which responds relatively quickly.
Didn't know K2 was helpful for teeth sensitivity, which I now take following your advice. Have just had my 6 monthly dental check up and no problems except a small clean at the lower front, I held my breath, as it's usually sensitive when they do it, but was relieved it was only slight this time - couldn't understand why. Only been taking it for a few months so another benefit didn't know about. What we learn on here is incredible. Hope you are well - dare I ask how the house renovations are coming on?
Glad your teeth didn't bother you so much this time. I do wish I knew if it really is a result of K2. I suppose if enough of us find this improvement we can say it's more than coincidence?
And I just wrote two paragraphs of complaints about my husband's foot dragging, and decided to delete. You don't want to read all that. Short answer, no renos have started yet. No one has been hired.
True. Sorry to have broached 'that' subject, I'll leave it at that...
The day they metaphorically get shovels in the ground I shall be gleefully posting!
I to have had teeth removed, root treatment done, been on alendronic infusion for 3 years as tablets made me sick.Seems we take one thing then that gives us more problems, vicious circle.xx
My teeth had never given any trouble for many years until pmr. After a few months on pred and AA fillings started falling out, then decay found in some teeth. I have always blamed either the pred or AA. I am fastidious in looking after my teeth as my dentist grumbles if there is any plaque on my teeth.
Liz.
Ah teeth - i was at the dentist myself this morning having a small fracture in my FRONT tooth - one of the few I have left which is not filled. Very reluctant to have it even touched but fearful of it cracking down to root and losing it altogether. All 'fixed' - not too 'deep' a crack and grateful - but I got this from grinding my teeth in my sleep when my Achilles tendon was causing terrible crampy pain - and that from myopathy and that is a side effect of Pred - so all interrelated - as all aspects of our 'health' are - with just one damn thing after another ... !!
