TMJ problem, bite is off

Yet another issue from pred?

Today, Saturday of course!, my jaw on the right side started “clicking” when I was eating and my bite felt off and then it would go back into place. But later when I was enjoying my dark chocolate treat it felt like it went back out of place and didn’t go back. My teeth are hitting on the left side only. I’ve got some pain on the right side, not bad, but the bite is definitely out of whack.

PMR/CGA, diagnosed January 2018, put on 40 mg pred.

3 days ago I tapered from 18.25 to 17.50. Seems to be OK except for some temple pain which Tylenol helps, the usual fatigue.

I guess my primary doc would be the one to help this, or would it be my dentist or ENT doc.

Does this have anything to do with the GCA?

Hello, jaw problems seem to crop up quite a lot here. It sounds like TMJ to me because of the mechanical symptoms you’ve got. I found problems a few months in with Pred and it coincided with my muscles doing a disappearing act. If Pred reduces skeletal muscle mass it makes sense that the jaw muscles are going to be affected too, especially if there is an uneven or novel bite already. I’ve had many a scare with temple ache, headache, neck pain only for my Bowen therapist to improve it 80% on the first day. My dentist confirmed it and I might pop along to my osteopath if it gets worse as she sorted out my daughter after big problems after extensive dental work. You can get gum sheild type things from the orthodontist to help too. Have you searched online for Temporomandibular joint dysfunction?

Thanks Snazzy.

Done a little searching about it.

I’ve heard people mention Bowen therapy, is that physical therapy? I’m in the US, don’t know if that’s available here.

I had really good results with Bowen in the 5 years of PMR pre-pred. It kept me upright and mobile if not pain-free in PMR terms but it worked wonders for myofascial pain syndrome for me.

Thanks PMRpro, I’ll check it out.

I had this problem too but not out of place Rheumatologist consultant wasn’t worried and it passed after a few weeks. Hope yours does too

At 30 mgs I developed a loud crack every time I opened my mouth to chew - rather alarming for those sitting adjacent! However eventually it disappeared on lower dose - around 10mgs. At the time, my dentist checked for me but he was not concerned. I have PMR only.

Dangerous stuff that dark chocolate! But so yummy😋 and you need something to get you through.

Seriously though, get it checked just to make sure.

I couldn’t make it without that stuff!

I guess the dentist should be the one to see?

That would be my choice.
