Am I right in thinking that with the coated variety of steroids, no yoghurt is required prior to taking them ?

No you won’t necessarily need yogurt but you will need to eat something with them.

Enteric coated tablets are made with a film or sugared coat which is pH sensitive. They do not dissolve in the acid conditions of the stomach but in the more alkaline pH of the small intestine. For this reason there should be no gastric irritation.

What happens if they are taken by someone who is also taking a PPI?

Not me, as I've stopped the PPI since being diagnosed with osteoporosis, but I was taking them before.

Only if you are the sort of person whose stomach objects to any tablets! Like my husband... I used to take e/c at silly o'clock in the morning with just water.

Love that - silly o'clock!

The leaflet with my gastro-coated pred says they should be swallowed with water and can be taken before or after a choc ice -oops 'meal'! You shouldn't take indigestion remedies 2 hours before or after taking them, as that will lower the acidity in your stomach.

Maybe I'm lucky, took pred for 2.5 years at mealtimes - no yogurt, no choc ice. Main thing to remember don't take Ibuprofen (will have dire consequences) if in pain use Paracetamol.

Absolutely ... particularly as I've been allergic to Ibuprofen for many years 😯

Dear Polylinc,

The Coated tablets, are less irritant, to your stomach so you might not need 'something', to calm it. I was on the Coated Tablets, at my Consultant's insistence, for many years. I am, no longer, on them but I take Omeprazole- as part of my Morning 'Cocktail'.

I often eat Yoghurt, in any case so I, tend to, be fairly OK. Omeprazole is, an 'Proton Pump Inhibitors'. Which means, to cut some VERY technical literature short, it reduces the amount of acid, that you stomach produces. The only possible Draw Back, is it CAN reduce levels of Vitamin B12, amongst other 'Things'. That said, I have been 'On This'- apparently quite Safely (well as 'safe' as anything is, with me)- for Twenty One years.

I can't tell you what Drugs, are best for you, but maybe you could speak to YOUR Doctors/Consultants? Just a thought.

Kindest wishes

AndrewT
