Same thing happened to me. I had to have an emergency debridement under GA as my wound was so infected, it smelt something awful. I had district nurses coming in for six months afterwards with the odd visit to the hospital they were going to do plastic surgery but I upped my protein intake and I was quite impressed with my healing considering I was taking pred. My leg now looks like a shark took a chunk out of it. I am afraid I do not seem to be able to attach photos on replying. I found it was a real pain trying to shower.

piglette... so sorry! What starts these sorts of horrific wounds??? what should we be looking for.?

My GP thought it was caused by thin skin. I think if there is pressure like a bruise it can then cause a blister. In the end my wound was 8 inches long and one and a half inches deep. I used to look at my leg and could not believe it was part of me.

Ooer, might be a bit much for some on here. Pity there isn’t a pre-view warning facility! Luckily, I love wounds so, is the black a charcoal dressing or tissue? What dressing are they using to continue to clean it up?

Yes sorry to any body that found it horrible I didn’t think so I do apologise

Yes it is tissue it’s getting a bit better after cleaning it up it doesn’t look to bad

They are putting hydrogel on it then covered it then wrapped it up in bandage the come every 3rd day

To change it

It will get there so take care you lot out there

Sorry to hear about your problem piglette

It will get there. I’ve seen lots of these heal over the years and they rarely happen to those who DON’T have issues with healing, skin problems and blood thinners. It’s a long haul, and you’ll get to know your nurses well!

Rusty8.. Please feel better soon. Focus on good lean protein if your kidneys are healthy for healing and keep your spirits up. We are rooting for you to get better snd soon!

Dear Rusty8,

That IS impressive! What was it, a boil, abscess, infected bone? I had a Peri-anal abscess, some years ago now, that I had to have Drained. Not as 'dramatic', as yours but still. You will probably need this 'Re-Packing', on a regular basis- often the worst bit.

As regards 'offending' anyone, aren't we all Fellow Sufferers, and all had similar?

Best wishes, to you Rusty, I hope all goes well for you.

Yikes, Rusty8!! I was just starting my breakfast..........! What the?! Looks like a vampire bat’s just landed on your leg!

Seriously - I hope you recover quickly from this - as if PMR/GCA isn’t enough for us to deal with. Best wishes

Oh my.... looks better, but not by much! Get well soon!

Hope it heals quickly for you Rusty.

On a lighter note, what's that growing out of your toe? Do you press it and it drains away the nasties haha

He he he didn’t notice that umm don’t know what it does lol 😂😂😂

@Rusty 8

OMG; your photos and posts are the stuff of nightmares and I really hope you're on the road to recovery.

I'm new to PMR and many of the horrors and I don't understand; what's caused this? Is it down to pred? Or an untreated wound/infection? I've got new painful bruises on arms and legs within the last few days. Painful, tender and swollen. I'm only 6 weeks in to diagnosis and treatment; is this something I need to watch for...

You should see mine, they are even worse! I try and show them like holiday snaps but most people decline graciously, the others just say OMG! Mine seem to have been caused through thin skin from the pred and then pressure such as a bruise. In fact my doctor did not have a clue but panicked and ordered emergency surgery. When I go to my osteopath you can see her fingerprints in bruises over me when I leave.

I’ve learnt the hard way don’t let it happen to you and others look after yourself try not to bang legs or arms against anything it’s hard I know and the more you try the harder it is

Can we stop steroids and put up with more horrible pain no I don’t think so

So please try to watch yourself

I had an ABPI Doppler check for PAD and PVD this week. The thing to take the blood pressure in my legs was only on for a few seconds but I have got the most horrendous bruises after it. They are very painful to touch as well. I have been really worried waiting for another blister to appear. The good news no PAD or PVD. Just hope there is no bad news with blisters. I am keeping out of the sun for a while as that seems to cause problems too.

I think these serious reactions are rare. But given that you seem to be sensitive I think it wise if you are particularly careful and make sure you moisturise your skin and eat food which is good for collagen regeneration, I think stuff like salads, foods with Vitamin C, probably high quality protein. As cartilage regeneration (and probably collagen) is inhibited by NSAIDs, including aspirin, if you were taking these for your pain before pred then their effect should go away now that you aren't taking them any more.

in reply to HeronNS

Thanks Heron. I take 75mg aspirin daily and I've been told to continue. No NSAID's for well over a year and then only sparingly. It's a daunting journey.

If you are taking that small dose of aspirin for cardiac reasons I wouldn't worry about it. I think it's more the larger doses taken for pain, or the other ones, naproxen, ibuprofen, and as you haven't been taking them then that's one thing you don't need to be concerned about. I've read people on this forum suggesting topical arnica as a remedy. Might be worth looking into? I haven't used it (luckily no need) but it might be helpful fend off any potentially worse skin problems. Bruising is very common, as are painless purple patches. The more serious situations are, as I said, much more rare.

in reply to HeronNS

Cheers; I buy all my meat online from Turner and George. It's ethical, organic and free from all growth hormones and antibiotics, so I consider it to be high quality protein.

Seems with this blummin disease you're damned if you do and damned if you don't. It's like walking into a dark tunnel and having boulders drop on you. A few direct hits, some miss. Roll on the light at the end.

I have arnica, so I'll bear that in mind, thank you.

@ piglette

Saw GP yesterday and showed her my bruising. Never had anything like it, ever. She said its 'just subcutaneous', it's skin thinning. So I thought little more...

So, can these just below skin bruises turn into significant abscess/ infection? How quickly? I'd appreciate any advice to help control if necessaty

I only had one really bad one where I needed an operation to clear out the necrotic=c tissue rubbish. It then took until this April to have district nurses dressing it, about six months. I thought hurray everything was OK, then in May I managed to bruise my leg quite badly on a garden chair I was opening. I then lay out in the sun and another blister appeared. This one seems to not have got into such a mess, I think I had a better nurse. I have still got appointments to have it dressed up to September at the moment. It is a real pain as I like to swim. I am now on ordinary plaster so have been having a go in the pool and hoping no one complains.
