Can't do rhubarb, allergic to it! Anaphylactic shock!

Caused some hilarity during recent visit to hospital though.

in reply to DorsetLady

Great. You're up running DL! It's different in hospital world! Sure you see it as it is! The good &............ Really helps if you hit lucky with other patients on the ward too! ATB

They wash you with alcohol and make you drink water, strange places hospitals

in reply to Angiejnz

Don't remember the smell of any alcohol Angie! But I was self administering Morphine at the time. Actually I don't remember being washed! Did drink gallons of water though. Kept filling the bag up!!! (too much information!) It's was like watching an old Brian Rix farce with doors opening, strange people making entrances, others with their trousers half down shouting, machines beeping & mobile phones going off!! Wonderful to get home & have a sleep!!

So right!

My late hubby always used to say ‘no point going into hospital if you want a rest -

No sooner do you get to sleep than someone wants to stick a needle in you, take your BP or ask if you’re alright!’

Bless ‘em all💐

in reply to DorsetLady

The Long, The Short & The Tall. I could make a couple of exceptions though!!!

I liked that self administrating morphine lark. So much, they took it off me.

in reply to borednow

Yer wasn't it great! Think there was a maximum amount that I could use in a certain time frame. Did make me feel a bit queasy & thirsty. Had a few fits of the giggles too. You must have excelled!!

wonderful places hospitals - saved my life, but I still don't like them!

No, saved my late hubby more times than I like to think about, but I know where you are coming from.

Us too! My daughter is a paramedic - she hates hospitals! Especially when they don't take her patients off her in a timely manner - and even less when she is the other side of the blanket as a patient ;-)

They always says the medical profession make the worst patients - too much inside knowledge I guess!

We are all certainly far too aware of what could go wrong!!!!!!!

in reply to PMRpro

Isn't that true! Same when you are knowledgeable in many other careers I imagine! Life, death & health does have a different edge to it though!

Your coal scuttle is so artful. My mum sent me out to play with a stick of Rhubarb and a bag of sugar.

in reply to SheffieldJane

It's not a coal scuttle Jane it's a Mop Bucket. One of those old galvanised ones painted black. Found it chucked away with other rubbish dumped at the Lickey Hills. We use a plastic one ourselves!! Yes Rhubarb what treat! No wonder my teeth are full of metal! Liquorice root was another risky one !! Hope you're enjoying yourself over there. ATB

Back in the U.K. thanks, away from the frenetic pace but not the heat, just the humidity 🙏. Saw the sun come up on the Lickey Hills in my misspent youth - beautiful. ✌️🌼

in reply to SheffieldJane

Marvellous view from the Toposcope. They are hacking the larch down at the moment with the tree disease problem. Looks a totally different place. Better not go into detail about Lickey Hills & a misspent youth Jane. Seem to remember something about "fern tickets"!!!

Butting in here Jane, did you enjoy your cruise, was it the cruise this time? you were worried about going...

SheffieldJane profile image
SheffieldJane in reply to Telian

It was amazing - not a cruise - just a 7 day crossing to New York on the Queen Mary 2. Coming in and seeing the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline, at dawn, from our private balcony was one for the bucket list . As ever the reality much better than the nervous anticipation. Thanks for asking.

One year the farmer grew rhubarb in the field at the end of our road - we were young and looking for something to do in the school hols so we sat and ate as much as we could, wouldn't recommend it! Always pleasant summers then. I like my rhubarb in a crumble, only home made though! Did you enjoy your dish, what did you make with rhubarb?

in reply to Telian

I chucked some it it in with diced chicken, ground ginger, capsicum pepper, tomatoes & an overripe banana. (not very cultured) It was ok at the time but not later!! Years since I had any sort of sweet or pudding except ice cream or yoghurt. My Mom made a nice Rhubarb crumble drenched in custard. Scrumping was more my forte! Had many a bellyache & the trots afterwards. Slow Learner!

Just remember not to eat your rhubarb along with your calcium tablets...

Telian profile image
Telian in reply to PMRpro

Thanks for the reminder haven't had it for years now..

in reply to PMRpro

Didn't know that. Wondered if there was any hazard with the steroids.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to

Not one to really worry about unless you eat LOADS of rhubarb or are a very delicate flower!

"Some medications for inflammation [e.g. steroids] can decrease potassium in the body. Rhubarb is a type of laxative that might also decrease potassium in the body. Taking rhubarb along with some medications for inflammation might decrease potassium in the body too much."

Can't say it was an effect I ever noticed! Love rhubarb - don't think I ever see it in the shops here.

Just had a short downpour - can smell the freshness as it's cooled down by 10, will last for the weekend only though.....so catch up with chores - as going to Yorkshire week after next.

What chores? I'll have a gin & tonic!!

Telian profile image
Telian in reply to

Only after the chores you will! - cheers me dears! G&T.... my favourite although I can make my own I quite like the canned ready made version in Tesco for £1!! You can even get low calorie and low alcohol ones and they are 'not bad' as someone who can be particular!

in reply to Telian

Sloe Gin, or is it Slow Gin you make! It takes ages! Did the home brewing & wine myself. What a pong! Headbangers they were!! Some of our gang liked them! It saved on the spend out later on!!

Telian profile image
Telian in reply to

It does with Slow Sloes...not anymore, I used to make home brew but preferred making wine, definitely Headbangers, they all used to drink it - anything for nowt!

Telian profile image
Telian in reply to

Talking about Pongs, my Grandad used to make his own horseradish sauce......my god we never went near when that was brewing....or when it was finished either it used to blow your head off, he used to put little piles of it on the side of his plate with mustard and salt and pepper too! and eat them with every mouthful of food! Yuk!! I now like horseradish - bought mind you...

in reply to Telian

My mother used to make it. We would have tears streaming for hours after! She rubbed the roots on a cheese grater & mixed the paste with cream. It was great on pork crackling I remember. There was large patch of it where my dad worked. The family there were virtually self sufficient in fruit & veg. Even peaches & nectarines were grown in the greenhouses. I find the bought stuff very disappointing same as the mint & parsley sauce which were home made too. Nostalgia Eh!

Telian profile image
Telian in reply to

Exactly - why was it so punjent - suppose it was its 'raw state' - he made it the same way as your mother, he grew it himself - grew loads of things, used to sell his cabbage seedlings - villagers used to wait for that time of year when his little blackboard went up outside the cottage - one of those that you hooked on, it used to swing in the breeze - saying 'cabbage plants so much a score! They had a big orchard and Grandma used to make toffee apples, they lived at the end of the school road so business was good at that time of year. Nostalgia yeah!

in reply to Telian

Apples & pears preserved in those big old sweet jars for Winter. Plums, damsons, raspberries, strawberries & guzzgogs( as we use to call them). Those old varieties had a lot more taste than the modern ones grown more for looks. He was poorly paid & it was hard work but we never went short of produce. Another thing not seen now are sprout tops.(when they are going to seed.) Lovely with mint sauce & a lamb chop, flooded with proper gravy. Thinking back he did suffer badly from rheumatism as he got older. Had gold injections from the doc. & used belladonna plasters on his back. Painful ripping those off!!

Telian profile image
Telian in reply to

All of those and agree wholeheartedly re taste, not at all the same now from the supermarkets. My tomatoes are lovely, even my son likes them and he's not a big tomato fan. Grandad was riddled with arthritis but NEVER went to the doctors, Grandma used to have a cure for everything with herbs they grew! His fingers were all gnarled and twisted and his knees were bad. He'd worked lifelong from 14 in the mines and as a coal face worker, nights regular, until he was 66, which was a record then - he died in 1988 aged 89. He wore his mining shin pads in the garden and was always making things to help his gardening jobs easier, he made a wooden wheelbarrow, it had a drop-down flap for ease of use...could go on and on.. Oh and this made me think of you - I was clearing some undergrowth in my garden yesterday and came across my grandads metal watering can! over a hundred years old it is - I'd forgotten it was there, no sign of rust anything I'm going to plant it up for nostalgia..

in reply to Telian

Yes got a couple of those cans, not a hundred years old though. They make interesting features in the garden. Old jugs & vases too. Have a small area of painted Lasts. We call it "The Last Resort" !!! Tough generations they were. We are babies in comparison! What a life working in a mine it must have been. If you had an accident you were as good finished.

Telian profile image
Telian in reply to

Considering whether or not to paint it. Love your 'Lasting' idea. I'm going to look out for old chimney pots next. Might keep an eye out in Tesco's car park! Someone thought it handy to leave some roof tiles and paint in the trolley park last week - disgusting! True - all too dangerous conditions - had a real community like no other - all watched out for one another. My husband's first job was as a Mine surveyor, involved measuring up after a fatality!

in reply to Telian

Not a fun job that!

Believe someone now makes a rhubarb gin...

in reply to PMRpro

Gin is big again it seems here! Lots of new flavours. I could do squirrel, ratty & wood pigeon blend myself! The old scrumpy cider makers use to chuck a lot of stuff in to give it some body! Or was that a myth? Mmmm!

Constance13 profile image
Constance13 in reply to

First time I tasted scrumpy was as a student in Bristol. Went with friends. I was warned not to drink more than 1/2 pint, but it was a long evening so I had another. Felt fine! When leaving the scrumpy pub, got outside the door - wham! Collapsed in a drunken stupor. Never did try to go over 1/2 pint from then.😂
