Need a hug

Bad day on Tuesday. Came back from dentist at 6pm to find my darling hubby having a stroke. Called 999, ambulance arrived in 10 mins, he was taken to RUH Bath. Admitted to the Acute Stroke Ward, it has affected his speech, eyesight and his left arm. I stayed with him until 10pm, my sister and hubby drove from Warminster, 1hr, to pick me up and take me home, so grateful for their help.

Yesterday I drove back to RUH with my sister to take clothes and washing stuff in for him. Drove around the car parks for 20mins looking for a space, people were parking on grass verges, pavements and double yellow lines, not a space to be had. Eventually at the back of the building found a 20min zone with 1 space so parked there, under threat of £80 fine for overstaying! What a shambles the parking is there.

Hubby was slightly improved, speech still slurred and quiet but understandable, he cannot see anything on the left and he cannot feel his left arm but is able to move his fingers. We left after 2.5hrs and paid at the pay station, where you have to remember when you arrived and your number plate!

I cannot see him today as I have an appointment myself at the Eye Clinic at a different Hospital. Will phone the Hospital later to see how he is.

They told me yesterday he may be moved to Chippenham Hospital where they have a Stroke Unit, that will be a bit nearer 1/2 hr.

Walked miles around the Hospital yesterday so left hip very painful today.

Had a glass of rose last night and fell asleep in front of TV.

Hoping for a better day today, not much parking at Eye Clinic so may have to park in Town and walk!!

Oh Dear Marcimay

What an awful thing to happen to your DH thank goodness you were back in time to find him as the sooner he was treated the better the outcome.

Hospital Parking is the absolute pits, so if anyone asks if there’s anything they can do to help get them to drop you off &/or pick you up. Take any offers of that kind of help.

Hope you get on OK at your appointment today & Very Best Wishes for your Hubby’s Speedy Recovery 🍀

Take Care 🌸

Oh Marcimay what a completely terrifying and stressful day, made all the worse by an appalling lack of strategy for the parking situation. My heart goes out to you as I picture you on the sofa utterly drained with a glass of Wine. Sending you many hugs and heartfelt wishes that your darling hubby makes a good recovery from his stroke. He has plenty of incentive with a lovely wife like you.

Well done! It sounds like you remained strong and competent in spite of everything that was thrown at you that day. The power of love I guess. Please do not neglect yourself in all of this, I hope you have loving friends and family to support you in this. If not, you’ve got us. Hugs 🌼🌸🌻💐🧡

PS. Just noticed that your sister and husband came through for you, thank goodness. I hope your eye appointment goes well too. You will be on autopilot. Bless you, bless you!

Oh gosh. A hug and more I think!

Take heart that people can recover from having huge problems after a stroke with rehab. The brain is amazing and I’ve seen many in a really bad state be back to normal or nearly normal. Still, I know how exhausting it is to do ‘the trek’ when someone is in hospital. Ask for as much help as possible as this will be the long game. 💐

I am very sorry to hear about your husband. It must have been very frightening. I really hope that he is moved to the more specialised care and the chances are that he will make a good recovery. In the meantime take as much Pred. as you need to get through and take as much rest as you can, especially before he comes home so you can b there for him when he is home.

Most of all, be kind to yourself.

I was in a place very similar 3years ago , himself was in for knee replacement . 27 hours after op it was decided to get him up for bathroom, and I had to tell them his other leg had no strength, his funny talking was put down to morphine. He was literally leggless . Not going on about the rest of the situation but he is fine now and has been for a couple of years no one would even know . Parking sounds just the same every place . I remember having a large brandy every night . Sending hugs .

Oh, Marcimay, what a terrible shock for you as well as for your dear hubby. The good news is that you got immediate help and he has been swiftly treated which will give him the best chance towards making a complete recovery.

Our son is unable to drive due to partial loss of vision from an overnight stroke aged 39 but, not being aware of having had a stroke, he didn't seek an immediate eye check for his blurry vision that day. It was also the weekend so a few days were missed. The likelihood is that his vision would have returned to normal had he been admitted to hospital for treatment sooner.

Your hubby has reached the best place in the fastest possible time and that will prove so helpful in his recovery. With a shorter travelling distance, it will be so much easier for you if he is moved to Chippenham - especially if the parking is easier there as well. Isn't hospital parking a nightmare - even when you are lucky enough to find a space it can cost a small fortune to park in it. Good luck with your own appointment today, and try and relax with another glass of rose tonight! Meanwhile, our very best wishes to you both.

Hi Marcimay,

So sorry to hear about your hubby. Do hope he makes a speedy recovery.

I think all hospital parking is a nightmare nowadays, they don’t seem have realised that most patients/families live out of town and therefore need a car to get there! Even more stress when you don’t need it.

I know how difficult it is to have our illness and also a spouse with another illness as well, so take as much help as you can from friends and family, and don’t be slow at asking for that help. You very often try and do doo much, and then you end up a wreck!

Good if they can get him nearer to home.

Hugs are on their way 🌹💐take care.

Marcimay

Do think about increasing your Pred as this is a very stressful situation & you need to look after you too.

Hugs 🤗 💐💕

I’m just now seeing this, what a nightmare you’ve been through. Hopefully your husband is in good hands and is improving! Echo the reminder to take gentle care of yourself, too, during this time. Don’t turn down offers of help. (Also, this makes me very appreciative of the valet parking for the public at the hospital I work at.)

Many thanks Jackoh,

He is seeing Orthoptics specialist today, to see what damage it has done to his eyesight. I'm having lunch with my sisters today, visiting OH again tomorrow, taking bank card for car park charges!
