Melancholic Returning Newbie!

Misty chill round a Bournville park pool this morning. I needed this walk badly. Crap nights sleep again. Nature keeps me saneside! Bag of grain, no bread these days! Coots, Moorhens, Mallards & Honking Canada Geese. The're very competitive. Fights breaking out everywhere. It's that time of year! The beauty of it all. ATB

I know exactly where you are! I used to live in Bournville/Northfield. 60’s and early 70’s.

Our ducks etc turn their bills up at bread now.

I hope your melancholy lifts - BE GONE! Tell it

Obviously heard too many healthy eating for ducks lectures...

in reply to SheffieldJane

Blimey! Jane you knowing Manor Farm Park.! Interesting unknown burning down of Cadbury Icon buildings here!! 2 of them!! Got to keep those green spaces going in Northfield. Well it's not as posh as it was!!!

We lived in a Bournville Village Trust house off Hole Lane. All that was my stamping ground. It’s really pretty in the Spring, with all the cherry blossom. My family are all buried in St Lawrence Churchyard ( that’s in the Doomsday Book).

in reply to SheffieldJane

Still a beautiful area with it's green pathways throughout & linking up parkland. Hasn't changed that much. Valley Pool, Row Heath,Victoria Common,Bournville Park & Woodlands Park still there. Still some stunning cherry trees now just flowering. Don't know when you last visited.

I buried my mum in 2013 back where she wanted to be, with her mum and my dad. I organised her funeral at St Lawrence Church and the Stone Pub. Not much chance to explore really. My health actually began to deteriorate after that. My mum had dementia and I had cared for her in Sheffield for 7 years. PMR recipe. Bit sad to go back, nobody left now. I remember the blossom though, and all the green spaces you mention.

in reply to SheffieldJane

A tough ask of anyone Jane. Life can be so unfair. Hope I haven't opened a box of sad memories for you. ATB

I don’t mean to be a misery. You actually made me think of the place in a better light after a fair few years of tiptoeing round it. All good healing stuff. How are you today?

in reply to SheffieldJane

Did send you a reply Jane. It appeared & now has gone. Spooky world this internet stuff!

That’s been happening to me lately too.

Have you accidentally clicked on cancel? That has happened to me a couple of times. Luckily only ever with a very short post...

in reply to PMRpro

Don't think so. Seemed to be there ok. Gone when I logged in later! Assumed red card or glitch! I have no idea how the moderators or system really works!

What did you say in it? 😳

in reply to SheffieldJane

The moment has gone you know how it is! It was along the lines of having a better nights rest, it was sunny & I was going for a skip down the towpath I felt so bursting. Which I did. (Without the skip! It was too muddy!) Also that Hole Lane lived up to it's name with some horrendous potholes. Travelled that way back from the park on Friday. Don't know if you care about any local news but the Manor House & Wooden Barn were both mysteriously burnt down a while back. A new housing site is going up on the Manor site!!! Other places have gone the same way locally!! Call me an old cynic eh! Should be on the Internet. Hope you're having a good day. ATB

Thanks Pepperdoggie, all the better for hearing from you. We lived on Garland Way with the duck/ goose pond at the bottom. Bournville Trust rules stopped it from getting ruined too much. I envy your bursting skipping feeling it’s exactly what’s missing from my life. Two years in with PMR and counting.

My youngest grandson Rafe, took his first steps this week. So at least my DNA is enjoying progress.

in reply to SheffieldJane

Bursting & skipping! It's just great to have the feeling ! Gasping old geezer more like! Must have walked your green pathway many times with dogie. Still the same & pond ok & a few Canada geese/Mallards. Strong family person you are you KRO.

SheffieldJane profile image
SheffieldJane in reply to

What is KRO?

in reply to SheffieldJane

KRO. "Keep Right On". For my sins I am a Birmingham City supporter. It's the club anthem. "Keep Right On to the end of the road. Keep Right On to the end. Though the way be long let your heart be strong keep right on round the bend. Though you're tired & weary still journey on etc" Harry Lauder. Music hall artist. Doesn't do much for their results! Sounds impressive though. Till the high notes are reached!!

SheffieldJane profile image
SheffieldJane in reply to

My new motto then KRO!

Do the Canada geese still try to stop you from crossing the bridge?

in reply to SheffieldJane

Yes they are a pain this time of year & make a right mess everywhere. Hard to believe such handsome yellow chicks turn into the adult version. Guess that might be said about some of us though!!! Travellers becoming a nuisance as well now on the green areas & parks. Area between Hole Lane & Woodlands Park last year & the Row Heath Sports field.

It would have to have been reported - and then PMRGCAuk moderators usually contact you to say please don't... It is VERY unusual for a post to be deleted. HU glitch seems far more likely!

Maybe, I seem to lose all my articulate, knowledgeable, particularly helpful posts. I jest. 🤣

Nature is the best healer. 🥀🦆

Very pleased to hear you are not feeding bread to the ducks. Big campaign here to stop people doing it. Here is a nice article:

mnn.com/earth-matters/anima...

in reply to HeronNS

Always for me Heron. Bigger picture than just us out there! A sensible article thanks. Angel wing is a problem with Canada Geese at a well known Brum park where they are just spoilt with bread. Squirrels are going the same way too. Tough love & not just entertainment is the way unless they are starving of course. ATB

I can remember many years ago watching a chipmunk coping with a small helping of peanut butter. It was very amusing, but now I wonder if the poor creature was actually at risk from the stickyness of the substance.

in reply to HeronNS

Feel sure other animals/life are far more savvy than we give them credit for. And they are as greedy/experimental as us if they want to be! Our Jack Russell would have eaten his own tail if he could!

Any bread just seems to get eaten by dogs!

All we need is a few days like a week last Thursday. Fresh, sunny and dry under foot. Then I can start checking all my wild raspberry and bilberry spots and hope cold snaps haven't stopped them in their tracks. I have missed my fresh air this week.

in reply to

Can't beat it can you Poop. The natural seasonal rhythm of renewal. Tomato seeds coming along nicely, runner beans going too well, pepper seedlings just starting. All in the greenhouse of course. Tuba begonias started this week. It's just great to pither & fiddle about with no heavy work involved. Low maintenance from now on if I can restrain myself. Wild raspberries mmmmmm. the freebies always taste the best!!

I have been finding this spring to be "special" here in the California San Francisco Bay area. Last weekend it was sunny with a crisp warmth. The wisteria was in full bloom, pansies, fresias and nasturtium. The grass was greener than I ever remember after all the recent rain and the air held more moisture hence more fragrance. OH and I had our grandpuppy, two yr old labradoodle who will play catch for hours so we spent lots of time outside in the yard. This weekend the purple Iris has joined the other flowers. I'm enthralled if not outright giddy.

I don't think I even noticed this season last year, only months into PMR and dealing with a mini flair just about one year ago today.

in reply to Hindags

That sounds idyllic Hindags. It's great to see the colours emerging & leaves opening on the trees. Been a very wet murky Winter here. Everywhere looking quite black & depressing in the fields & gardens. Magnolias coming into flower now along with Aubrecia,Daffs & Tulips. I am coming up to a year since my diagnosis of GCA. Still have a lot of mental adjustment to make! This forum has been a great help. ATB

I love the villages of England and Scotland that I've visited. The green and the care in preserving what can be preserved speaks to me.

Your descriptions of the area sound delightful.

in reply to Hindags

It's worth looking up the history of Cadbury Bourneville. A model " chocolate box village" The family were Quakers with a paternalistic view of the workers in their factory. Hasn't changed that much.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to

Cadburys chocolate has though!!! Not for the better either :-(

SheffieldJane profile image
SheffieldJane in reply to PMRpro

You’ve got that one right! What do Kraft know about iconic British Chocolate?

The factory in Bournville was like a worker’s utopia, with playing fields and really lovely housing. Lots of pastoral care. Where have the philanthropists gone?

in reply to PMRpro

Meant the village layout not the company!! Mostly robotics now! Everyone knew someone who worked at Cadbury. Waste/mixed products sold off cheaply to the workers. ( I had an aunt who worked there part time) It was gold dust in the 50's!! Yer! the chocolate is crap now. Nothing like. Healthy eating,European cobblers on chocolate definition etc. I loved the old Bourneville dark myself. Amusing the family battle over favourites & which ones were always left. NO wonder my teeth are rubbish!!

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to

Nothing to do with Europe - the changes to Cadbury products are down to the new US owners. Chocolate in the rest of Europe hasn't changed - like a lot of other things that the UK media tell you is due to Europe.

Maybe Just had a time out replying. Is that the glitch! Ready to send I was! AHH!
