“I saw my GP who became alarmed and said with eyes you have to deal with things quickly but they couldn’t pin down what was wrong so they contacted Professor Dasgupta.”
After hearing his symptoms, the professor delayed a morning flight in order to see Mr Zetter.
He said: “The professor called me at home that night and said he would alter his schedule to meet me at 8am. I went to the rheumatology department and they used a doppler scanner which confirmed I had the disease.
“It was a big shock. I thought that was it – I was going blind.”
Mr Zetter was immediately given three days of intravenous steroid treatment followed by oral steroids. He added: “Without them I would have almost certainly gone blind. By then I was blind in my right and it would have gone on to affect my left eye.

2: I have never heard of anyone having an operation to restore their sight - that does not mean I know everything far from it.
About 4 or 5 years ago, a claim was made that someone in China had an an operation to restore sight and when that claim was investigated it proved that it had not been GCA. Hope someone else can remember that occasion.
It worries me that someone could read this article and then think, "I can get my sight back".
3: Dasgupta, would NOT have waited overnight to see a patient whose sight was in danger.
OK, I am an old cynic, but would really like to know the hard facts...............perhaps the article was edited before publication?
Sorry, but what makes you think the doctor would not delay his flight to see his patient? Believe it or not, there are some dedicated people around who would do this.
That was my immediate thought jinasc, why would you wait til the morning when his sight was coming and going. An immediate response could have saved it. Something doesn't seem right in this story. I feel Proffesor Dasgupta would have seen him straight away or at least sent him to A&E. He is passionate about this condition and saving sight by bringing awareness of it to the public. cc
