I have just been Diagnosed with PMR. I am on 10 mg of prednisone. 35mg actenol once a week. It’s been 4 days and I seem a bit better. I seem to be anxious :(. Will this go away ?

Also it’s supposed to be taken with food does that mean complete meal , Or will a banana suffice ?

Hi,

Recommended time for Pred is with or after breakfast, but any food will help.

Have you been prescribed VitD/Calcium supplement (which maybe all you need rather than Actonel to protect against osteoporosis). Or is your Actonel a multi combination tablet/sachet covering the VitD, Calcium & Bisphosphate?

I don't think Actonel is widely used in UK, so I'm guessing you live in North America.

Did doctor suggest a PPI - like omeprazole or similar?

Perhaps you like to give us a bit information about your illness

Hi Aladymo, 10mg is a pretty low starting dose. People normally start at 15mg and sometimes 20mg. If 10mg works OK just carry on though.

Have you had your bone density checked? It is normal to have this done before offering you something like Actenol, as you may not need it.

Hello, sorry you're feeling anxious...it can be distressing in the beginning with PMR... the questions far outnumber information in early days. Questions like ‘what is this disorder’, and ‘ how long will I have it, ‘ etc...

You have arrived at the best source of information you will find, regarding this diagnosis, its treatment, and how to get on with your life while PMR runs its course.

On the right side of this page is a section called “topics”. There you find the archives for this forum, and almost all your questions have been addressed there.

Someone is here ,active, on this forum 24-7, and questions receive quick responses, even if to give a bit of reassurance and support till PRMpro, DorsetLady, and other wise ones arrive.

Welcome, have a cup of tea, and rest assured, you are in the right place for support and information.

Warm Regards, Jerri

(Diagnosed PMR , October 2013, currently on 2 mg pred.)

Even a glass of milk is felt by many pharmacists to be enough. But everyone is different and you may need more. Just a cracker isn't enough though.

And I wouldn't take the Actonel (risendronate) to start with until I had had a dexascan to show I needed it. Calcium and vit D yes, bisphosphonate, not yet.

My bone density showed deterioration hence the actenol! After 2 days felt better, now numbness in feet and leg. Guess I’ll give it time ! Reading previous posts!

Deterioration possibly - but all these things are relative! I have osteopenia - but nowhere near the stage that requires more than calcium/vit D supplementation and a mindful exercise approach.

I have osteoporosis and would not take actonel. What is your score? It is a powerful and I think scary drug. Perhaps more research into it.... Good luck the PMR takes its own sweet time to go away but the Prednisone is quite the miracle for PMR sufferers. (I hate that word..what else can we be.. PMR pets... Anyway... This site is a huge help! Listen to PMRpro and Dorset lady and Sheffield Jane and Heron S and YOU will be on the right track! (take anything I say with a grain of salt!)

I have severe osteoporosis and took every drug on the market for about a 15 year span! I developed hyponatremia from diuretic endocrinologist prescribed because calcium leaked from my bones. It took me a long time to realize I didn’t have to follow doctor’s orders. Now I’m a feisty patient!

If it helps. I was diagnosed March 2016. Doctor prescribed 10mg and it worked for me. I do realise I’m fortunate not to have started on a higher dose. It worked within a couple of days. I now down to 8mg, reducing very slowly. I’ve had a couple of flares and had to go back to 10 and once with advice from these wonderful knowledgeable people on this forum to 12 for a week. The flare I know was caused by reduction and at the time was very stressed. Stress does seem to have a major impact, for me anyway. I take calcium and Vit D but refused the Alendronic Acid, Bone scan showed I didn’t need it. I take my Pred with breakfast. I also take Ranitidine for acid reflux, side effect of the Pred. It’s an anxious time, suddenly you find life has to slow down, you have to learn to pace yourself. This forum is a lifeline for advice support and laughter. It’s good to know you are not alone, there are people who understand.
