This has just been posted on the VasculitisUK forum and I though people would be interested to read it. It is the first step to creating tailored treatments for disease.

Very interesting. Tho' I seem to have kicked PMR, I still have Sjogren's to contend with. Thanks.

I think it is a great idea. Mind you I got a bit depressed today my cleaning lady (posh aren't I?) has been in hospital for a few days with stomach problems. They diagnosed her with appendicitis, but then someone else said it wasn't. She said there was a lot of arguing, NOT appendicitis won. They then asked her if she were pregnant, she is 59 years old!!

Hmmm - makes you wonder about their appendix dx! Nat spent a week in the university hospital as a child and was sent home on Friday - definitely NOT appendix. Next morning - same old symptoms. So the GP ORDERED me to drive in the other direction to the local hospital. They decided it was more likely to be appendix than anything else and would operate next morning if she didn't get worse before that. I met the junior doctor when he was doing a locum for our GP some months later. Who told me the appendix looked normal - until the pathologist got hold of it: all the damage was on the inside and about to pop. One more episode of pain and it would have been peritonitis. We decided an appendix was too simple for the Uni hospital...

One does despair. My brother in law had the same thing. It was only when his appendix burst at 3am in the morning that they realised what it was. I think his screams were heard over the county.

At least he screamed - it is the silent ones that kill. No pain - until you are dying of sepsis.
