Pred. and post nasal drip

Hi just wondered if the steroids aggravated this condition. I am on a low dose but mucus at back of throat especially during night is becoming a pain. Any thoughts and help would be welcome. Thanks.

It could be a low level infection because your immune system has been compromised. Or possibly related to Hay Fever. The pollen count is very bad in the UK right now. Don't think we can lay this one at Pred's door.

I also have post nasal drip which the ENT doctor told me was caused by acid reflux.I took the PPI he prescribed for months but I still have the PND plus the constant lump in my throat and a cough, sometimes dry and sometimes productive...Ive had these symptoms since the very beginning of my PMR (after DX).The cough got worse when I started a BP medication but even when I changed medications, I still cough.Im constantly either clearing my throat that never clears or coughing.

I also thought it could be from the pred.

Have you tried something other than a PPI? They don't work in 1 in 3 patients.

No, I haven't.. What else can I try for the post nasal drip?

Maybe an antihistamine?

I was thinking of you today, PMRPro. I went to see my new endocrinologist who happened to be Italian😃.He said he wanted to rule out hyperparathyroidism as my PTH was still raised, despite my vitamin D rising. I won't know anything till Sept. thought, as everything shuts down in August in Spain..and July, too.

Sounds like here - delighted your endo recognised raised PTH as being a problem...

It's for the acid reflux you might need something else - there is always ranitidine, sold in most countries as Zantac. Ranitidine is the substance name so a pharmacist should recognise it. It is the forerunner to the PPIs - does the same job near enough but with different/fewer side effects usually.

Thank you, I think I took the newest form of ppi. I seem to tolerate older generation drugs in general which makes me wonder why they don't leave well enough alone. 😂I'm definitely going to try zantac.

I too am constantly clearing my throat & have a perpetual 'frog in my throat' . I am always sucking on sugar free mints/sweets to keep my throat moist. Maybe it's one of those side effects that hasn't been listed as it's only a minor irritation in the scheme of things. I can't remember if mine started with the diagnosis of PMR or when I started taking Pred.

I'm only on 7.5mg of pred daily but I too get a constant mucal throat - feels a bit sore most mornings but the soreness does go away over the day after a good clearing. And I'm always sniffing and blowing my nose - but I know it's not a cold or flu. I've always put it down to a pred side effect cos it didn't happen before I took pred. If it was cold/flu it would probably make me very ill cos I have methatrexate suppressing my immune system too.

Good morning. I know how you feel but I have had this condition for years with various tests and nasal drops with no success therefore I don't think it has anything to do with the Pred. However I have recently returned from a Med cruise and Strangely, but great, I didn't get this constant morning coughing and clearing my throat but a couple of days after returning there it was again. I mentioned this to my Doctor and she thought it was to do with pollen and suggested a Antihistamine which I don't feel happy about as this isn't just a seasonal thing AND it isn't dust or pets I can assure you. One thing that does help which the Doc recommended is a nasal spray which you can by at the Pharmacy is called Sterimar costs £5 something but does help. Good luck.

How can so many of us on here have post nasal drip, etc., and it not be a side effect of Prednisone or a symptom of PMR?

Thank you, Dot. Have the same problem. Will try.

Much appreciated.

Hi Reethebeat,

Had the same problem. It comes fron Prednisone and Sparing Steriod drugs.

At first was also given Rhinolast Nasal Spray, which didn't help at all.

Try to take 20mg Omepradex (Omeprazole) 30 minutes before breakfast.

It immediately helped me.

Hi I have suffered with this condition for many years, it's always worse in the morning, my parents used to smoke and as a child I think the passive smoking has caused this.

I do find that if I gargle with salt water it does clear it up. It seems to be the only thing that has helped.

I think the pred does affect it more though x

I've had this for years, but the Pred certainly didn't help. Not sure if the PND is worse, but I now snore very loudly (when asleep), and never did before Pred.

Neti pot style nasal wash only thing that eased mine over the years or antihistamine if I have to

Thanks so much for your helpful comments. Cheered me up to know I was not the only one. Shame I cant wave a magic wand over us all. x

Hallo again, out of desperation I tried my humidifier last night and the night before. Havnt used it for years. Funny enough I managed to get two decent nights sleep for once. Still the problem was there during the day, but it didnt seem so bad. Maybe keeping the air moist helps the tubes. Just an idea. As you say Sheffield Jane the pollen does not help at the moment.

in reply to Reethebeat

oh and the baby nose clearing saline spray you can get from chemists. Counterintuitive but needs more moisture. That stuff usually ok with meds
