I wrote about damage limitation recently stopping AA but got facts wrong as usual. I am now down to 5 mg preds and I want to know the risk now if I drop the alendronic acid pill as it has such risks (I understand) of damage to stomach.
Please can I stop it after two years as I would feel happier to do so.

If you are asking whether you can stop AA cold turkey, yes you can. Unlike pred it doesn't need to be tapered, unlike antibiotics you do not need to ingest a predetermined amount. Latest research seems to indicate that two years on AA is sufficient to gain greatest benefit with fewest risks of side effects. Do what you can naturally to promote bone health (supplements including Vitamin K2, weight bearing exercise and a well balanced diet).
I took AA for a year before I read about the side effects. I stopped taking it and asked for and got a Dexa scan last November. The results said I had Osteopenia, slight bone loss, so my Dr told me to resume the AA. I also take Omeprazole to protect the stomach, but have learned that that can take Calcium from the bones as well!! I don't like taking it but don't want to get Osteoporosis. Dr recommends only taking it for 5 yrs. I am currently on 9mg Pred reducing to 8.5mg.
