hi everyone,

posted earlier in the week thinking that my hip/back pain was due to my reducing pred from 10 to 9.

managed to get an appointment with the doctor this morning as the pain was worse in the night .

the outcome is i have got shingles now .she put me on anti virals for seven days.

Does anyone know if this is p m r related?

Hi Manchesterlady

I'm so pleased you saw your GP & now have treatment, it's so easy to blame PMR for every pain

Oh dear ManchesterLady,

Not nice, so sorry.

It does say in the Pred paperwork that you should stay away from anyone with chicken pox/shingles.

Fortunately you did the right thing seeing the doctor and getting treatment.

Get better soon,

Possibly - but difficult to say since people develop shingles anyway. It could well be something to do with your mixed-up immune system.

When you have chicken pox as a child the virus then hibernates in nerve endings in various parts of the body. Something - no-one knows what - may cause it to reactivate and you develop shingles. You can't CATCH shingles but theoretically someone else COULD catch chicken pox from you - but it is very difficult as the virus is just present in the rash and if it is covered up you shouldn't be shedding it in any other way.

Much sympathy - I had a bad case of shingles a couple of years ago after a stem cell transplant (to halt progression of multiple sclerosis - it worked!) - it was the most horrible pain. As well as the Acyclovir (antiviral) I ened up on high dose Gabapentin for the pain. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Hi @Manchesterlady, I have had back and hip problems for years, And they have gotten worse, i'm not on Pred. nor have been. but I was on another steroid. which i weened myself off of for 9 Months. and since then , Like Oct, until now have had severe diarrhea with the exception of the past two weeks. I decided to eat things that I have always shied away from because of it causing constipation. and that seems to have helped , but do have to be careful of what I eat.

Now , back to the back and hip pain. my hip would get to the point of feeling like it was on fire. I couldn't stand on it at all. Especially painful when getting out of bed. and would keep up until my walking around would deem to ease the pain. It wasn't easy , but it helped a lot. I have been told that i Had stynosis in my spine , and the sciatic nerve was being pinched. Well I don't know how true that was, aS SINCE i HAVE FOUND THAT THE pIRIFORMIS MUSCLE IN MY HIP, was wrapped around the scaitic nerve. and would tighten the nerve until it got unbearable. You can look up the Piriformims Muscle on Google or Yahoo. also You Tube. and they do show the exercises that help to loosen that muscle so it isn't strangling the nerve. and relax the leg. then further on, I have been trying to walk as straight as possible . knees the whole 50 yards. Do not stand on one leg or the other. but walk , stand , and sit as straight as possible. and don't lean on anything. and that seems to settle down that muscle to stop tightening up on the nerve. It has to be very conscious until it becomes normal for you, and the pain almost disappears. But it is something you have to work at. and no prescription of any kind is needed. Once you can see what is happening. , and know what is causing it. half the problem is solved. the rest takes determination. good luck ! You can do it. and if that should happen again, just do that simple exercise that you can do sitting.

I am 82 years old . so it has nothing to do with age. Judi, Judam9
