hi l am new. I have had pmr for two years. Does anyone suffer from really high temperatures on a daily and night basis? Is it the steroids?

Hi - I've been on steroids for 20 months now - still regularly get sweats at night, but not so much during the day. I invested in a ceiling fan which has made a huge difference!

If by "high temperatures" you mean sweats - yes, I think most people do. However - the question is: is it the pred or is it the PMR?

I had sweats in the 5 years I had PMR before starting pred. I had sweats after I was started on pred but fewer. I've had even fewer since I was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation and put on medication for that and for high blood pressure (which had never been suspected previously but had obviously existed judging by the echocardiogram that was done - all previous BP measurements had been normal).

And Venezia is right - a fan of some sort is a boon. And keep the bedroom cool anyway, you can always throw off bedclothes for a short while. During the daytime - wear layers for ease of shedding.

thanks l have the night covered daytime is quite difficult. I think it is because l work 10-3 and my normal low blood pressure goes up then l get the sweats. My boss is brilliant and l can take time out whenever l need to but l feel a right idiot with sweat pouring off my face and everyone else is saying how cold it is.

Ah well - lots of "ladies of a certain age" can sympathise! One of my friends is an English teacher and went through a period of having drips off the end of her nose onto pupils work as she suddenly had a "hot flush". I had a couple of winters of wishing my husband would put more clothes on rather than turning the heating up a few more notches! Since being on a suitcase of cardiovascular medication I'm much colder - and he's decided to wear a vest. You can't win.

I feel as though my thermostat is on the blink! I really battle in warm weather and often have hot flush type sweats day and night, I can't wait for cooler weather when I feel much better all round, I must be the only person who looks forward to the winter.

I also manage the nights ok but shops are the worst places for me. I get funny looks in a tee shirt on a frosty day. But beads of sweat dripping are not a good look either. I never had them going through menopause so this was a new & nasty experience. It helps to know you are not alone with it. Take care

Hi I had terrible night sweats before I was diagnosed with PMR in 2011. they frightened me to death by telling me I might have some sort of cancer before a wonderful doctor at our local hospital sorted it all out. However as soon as I started on pred I have never had a night sweat again(except when it was really hot last summer) I do however sweat buckets when we go for a walk which we do quite regularly 4 miles usually. Its really only my head that sweats and I end up with dripping wet hair which people seem to find funny!Wendy

Hi, welcome to the PMR/GCA club! I used to have terrible night sweats. A couple of years ago we learned that recent research has shown that IL-6, the substance our over-active immune systems create in PMR that causes the awful inflammation, is at its peak in our systems in the small hours of the night. So no wonder we wake sweating at four in the morning. And no wonder we feel stiff and achy when we wake up at 7.

Reading all these posts really helps! (As not alone with your symptoms) I had terrible menopausal sweats - day and night - just easing off when I deveoped PMR. Now I get a few each day which I put down to the pred. Bearable if you know what is causing them...........!

Yes, really bad night sweats most nights and hot flushes during the day - any time! They are not so bad with decreased steroids. I'm down to 6mg a day at the moment, from 60mg 2 years ago.
