Hello everyone,

I have reading about dieting and PKD and I was wondering what everyone recommends. Should I go vegetarian? Alkaline? Vegan? I am so confused, I love chicken and beef but I know now that beef is a no no. I am also going to Japan quite soon.. any tips?

Thanks everyone!

Hello Theskewer

I’m a PKD patient and really don’t watch my diet other than avoiding high protein foods, potassium and anything processed but even foods that contain these I consume very occasionally. The main thing with PKD is to limit sodium ie salty food particularly Chinese as it always contains MSG. If your going to Japan there’s likely to be mostly high sodium ie soy sauce but lots of nice fresh food also. Finally unless your GP has put you on a special diet I would say everything in moderation.

Have a great trip👍🏻

I hope you have found your way to the PKD Charity's page on Diet and Lifestyle on their website. They work hard to make sure that the info is accurate and up-to-date. And what they say there is the best info we have at this time.

"No specific diet or lifestyle measures have been shown to prevent cysts developing in people with ADPKD."

It does go on:

"However, a healthy lifestyle may help to protect your kidney function and reduce your blood pressure and risk of cardiovascular problems, such as stroke."

Do read the page. You will see that beef is not a no-no unless your doctors have told you that specifically. There is a lot of misinformation about, or just old information or not-actually-PKD information.

It is not scientifically true that everything we like is bad for us! Veganism is not more healthy than vegetarianism, and you will notice that the webpage is not even pushing vegetarianism on us. Wikipedia is quite interesting on the Alkaline Diet :) If you really want a set diet to follow, then the PKD Foundation suggests the DASH diet.
