My left kidney is filled with cysts. I was told one hemmorraged, if I didn't pass the blood in my urine where did it go? I also have them in my right. How often should I get an ulttasound of my kidneys? My Nephro says as long as blood work is okay, but 2 yrs showed protein in urine.

Hello there, I also have multiple cysts in both kidneys and in my liver due to Polycystic Kidney disease. I have had one episode of bleeding into a cyst the blood remains within the cyst unless it bursts then it would show in your urine. The best thing you can do is maintain good blood pressure control and avoid anti inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen, Diclofenac, Voltarol as they can affect your kidneys very badly. Drink plenty of water every day to remain well hydrated if your urine is dark in colour drink more!! Good luck and if you need any more info let me know

Thanks a lot Christine! I only take Tylenol anyway because I also have Epilepsy, Lupus, Fibromyalgia and a few more health problems. I do drink plenty of water. I am having a problem right now with my bladder. I am not having a steady stream of urine even though I have the urge to go. I sit there for minutes until I think I am done and then another little bit more. I have seen a Urogynecologist and I go back in 2 weeks even though this has been going on now for over 2 months and get a cystoscopy. My last appt. with them I gave a urine sample and they catherized me and I still had some urine in my bladder. Does your stomach look big like you are pregnant and you get pains in your flank area and are uncomfortable?

My tummy is increasing in size, my Dad had a really big tummy due to the cysts too. Yes I have constant pain in the flank area worse on the right than the left. It feels like a nagging deep ache or cramp I find heat helps, I also use a tens machine at work to keep me going. I also get restless legs especially in the evening and have found tonic water helps with this. Hope all goes well with your cystoscopy and other health problems. I am in remission from breast cancer 2 years ago.

Sometimes cysts can burst and then you might see blood in your urine.

Ultrasounds are only usually required if there is a clinical reason, for example a cyst infection or a cyst causing pain that might need aspiration.

So, then I might not always see blood in my urine if a cyst has hemorrhaged? How often should you get CT scans on your kidneys? I have not had one since I was diagnosed in 2005. The only reason I know about all the other thins is because I have herniated disks, bulging disks, and a lot of other problems and they caught this on my MRI of the back. Thank you! Lisa

I am not a doctor but I don't think you always see blood in the urine. Sometimes it's microscopic. It may also just seep away into your body, like when you get a bruise.

Usually CT scans are used to diagnose an issue or identify something that can be treated, rather than part of routine care. There's no need to have one unless necessary.

I've only had one scan in 40 years of PKD.

I am so encouraged by what you just said about having pkd for 40 years.Would you be willing to let me know how old you were then? What you've been doing health wise, what you eat and how you've coped with it pshhcologically because I have been having problems dealing with it in my head.I think about it almost all the time.I am hungry but scared to eat.I am 41 now just diagnosed and scared.Always wondering about how much time I have left.

The cysts fill up with fluid because there is no way out. So if there is bleeding, there is no guarantee that the blood will get to the urinary system. Blood may stay in the cyst. The cyst may burst and lead to bleeding into the cyst's surroundings. That might be part of the urinary drainage system, or it might not.

The simple test for whether or not a scan is needed is whether its results might lead to a change in treatment. As we don't have many treatments aimed at our cysts. we generally don't need many scans.

... and protein in your urine (which many of us have) usually shows there is old damage. If the amount of protein is not getting worse then the damage is not getting worse.
