I'm 45 and i think ive started the perimenopause stage of my life. Since August I've had irregular periods, which are not normal for me. Plus my mood swings have been horrendous from swinging to feeling depressed to wanting to kill someone.

Can anyone recommend any supplements that may help with these emotional symptoms. I'm eally struggling with the extreme emotion when it hits.

Thank u x

Hi Delphin. The perimenopause can be a very difficult time for some women and mood swings you’re experiencing are due to your hormones fluctuating madly. I, too, found the emotional roller coaster the most difficult thing to deal with. I’m not sure about supplements except that I know you should consider vitamin D as we are all probably deficient in it. As oestrogen levels fall, our bones become weaker, so vit D helps to keep them strong. Vitamin B6 can help with your mood, but if you’re not deficient in vitamins forking out for them can be a waste of money, imoh.

Is HRT not an option for you? Although you’re not actually menopausal yet, HRT can help to smooth things out. It was a life saver for me.

Hi Rachel, thank you for your response. I'm not ruling HRT out but I was wondering if there was anything natural out there on the market before I try HRT.

Well, there are lots of supplements out there marketed for menopause, but when you look at the ingredients they are pretty much the same as standard, cheaper multivitamins. Soy is supposed to be good, as well as sage. Some people swear by black cohosh and red clover, but there is no scientific proof that they do anything. We’re all different, though, so what works for one, won’t work for another.

Good luck. X
