I haven't started it yet, some people seem to have horrendous side effects. Have you seen a specialist nurse who explains, positioning, splinting etc? There is a very good website called wholewoman.com worth having a look at.

Hi Christie63,

I haven't tried prucalopride, so I will be interested to see what replies you get about it as I too have a troublesome rectocele which can trap my stools. I've too have been refused surgery - In my case because my rectocele is, apparently, 'too small', even though it doesn't feel that way when my anus is full of poo; it feels like the prolapsed 'pocket' is the size of a tennis ball! (The docs have only ever seen my rectocele after I have managed to empty my bowels, so it would look small to them, I guess...Also, I believe the position of the prolapse dictates how much trouble one has in pushing the stools out, more than the actual size of the prolapse.) To be honest though, I'm trying not to have surgery now anyway - As (although they often do a first rectocele repair without mesh and just stitches) from what I've read, such 'stitch-only' repairs often fail (and fail quite quickly) and then the surgeons usually use mesh...and I don't want to risk all the problems of possibly ending up being mesh damaged. The best I've found to do for managing my rectocele constipation-wise is taking Benefiber (they sell it in Boots) and Acacia fibre (they sell it on Amazon and ebay). I sometimes take psyllium husk (which you can also buy from Amazon and ebay) but I have to be very careful with that as, on one occasion of taking it, I either took too much for my needs and/or didn't drink enough water and the stuff set like concrete in my anus; I thought I was going to have to go to A&E to sort it out as it was so bad, but somehow managed to pass it out! Anyway, the majority of the time I have to splint around my anus to defecate - In my case I press with my fingers either side of my anus and on my perineum in order to 'go', which is a bind, but it works as the Benefiber and Acacia fibre keep my stools nice and soft, so I usually go well and fully. I find the trick is to always go to the loo as soon as you feel a bowel movement coming on, as without the momentum of the natural bowel movement, it's much harder to go - I also fear that regular straining would make my rectocele worse/bigger.

If/when splinting along with taking the Benefiber and Acacia fibre doesn't work, I'm going to ask if I can be prescribed a peristeen, see wholewoman.com/forum/node/2170 for one woman's experience of using it to cope with her rectocele and wakeman.co.nz/site/chriswak...

I saw a specialist nurse when I first got my rectocele and she recommend trying one of these stressnomore.co.uk/femmeze-... but I found it useless for my rectocele - slipped and slithered all over the place. You can get them on prescription, so it could though be worth a try in case it might help with yours though.

One lady I was in correspondence with who has a rectocele swears by taking a teaspoon of organic coconut oil a day to help smooth passage of her stools - Haven't tried it myself in case the oil triggers off my grumbling gallstones.

Someone else I know with a rectocele is prescribed Miralax on the NHS amazon.co.uk/d/Health-Perso... and says it's a tremendous help to her, but I've not tried that either. She said that it took a while of regularly using it every day to sort things out for her to 'go' properly every day.

Hope something I've said might help you. Xx

P.S. How could I forget?? - I also find using one of these squatty potties helps a lot too amazon.co.uk/d/Bathroom-Sto...
