Hi all, I have had chronic abdominal pain for several years since I was diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease, all doctors said the pain was constipation or IBS. recently I had bad pain in the area of my appendix and so they finally did a laproscopy. they found my appendix was surrounded by adhesions and that I also had adhesions all up the right side of my bowel. I also had a transvaginal ultrasound which was sooo painful, and they said there was some free fluid in my pelvis, and also wondered whether one ovary was stuck to my uterus, (the surgeon never commented on my ovaries or uterus, just the appendix). So I don't know what caused the adhesions and I don't know if I have endometriosis. iv always had awful painful heavy periods, and pain around ovulation time. was wondering if endometriosis would cause adhesions of the bowel like mine though? thanks

Hi I have the same pain in the same area did it hurt when you did number twos in the toilet . As I have that problem and im not constipated . The pain in my right side goes from my lower to right up into my ribs and I've had my apendix out . It's annoying as well as painful. And I just want to get rid of it .

Inflammatory bowel disease, endometriosis, infection can all cause adhesions of the bowel. Is the IBD under control ? do you take medication for it ? Has anyone suggested removing the appendix ? If you have this I would ask them to do histology and request the report of this. This will say if there is endometriosis in the appendix. If the ovary is stuck/adhered this can also cause considerable pain.

hey thanks for replies. yea I had my appendix out last week and the histology isn't back yet! I recently had a colonoscopy which appeared normal so yes my IBD is under control and im on methotrexate and humira. The surgeon thought the adhesions had been going on for quite some time.

I wouldn't say going to the loo is painful, well I get stomach cramps and I get some minor bleeding from the back passage, but its more the constipation and straining that's the issue.

Have you requested a copy of the transvaginal ultrasound scan ? Also have had a 3D pelvic floor ultrasound scan ?

Hi Elz100

I am a physical therapist and we specialize in treating adhesions that can cause all sorts of pain and organ dysfunction. Adhesions are formed as a normal part of the healing process after surgery, trauma, infection or inflammation. You have had a laparoscopy, and they definitely can cause adhesions affecting the small intestines causing symptoms like IBS, abdominal and/or pelvic pain. Endometriosis definitely causes adhesions because the body "sees" the endometrial implants as "foreign," so it lays down adhesions trying to contain them.

You can find out a lot of information about your conditions at my website- clearpassage.com. We have published studies in peer-reviewed journals about our success in treating endometriosis, bowel obstructions, etc.

I hope that helps.

thanks, well I hadn't had any previous surgery when they found the adhesions, but im aware having surgery then makes more adhesions more likely to form. Also my adhesions where round my large bowel, not my small bowel.

Judy, I have a copy of my transvaginal ultrasound report to show to my GI specialist. Ive not heard of the 3D scans though, do they show endometriosis?

Im hoping my histology will come back in the next 2 days else im not going to have it for my appointment to see my IBD specialist and Im hoping she could refer me to whoever is necessary, although I have private health insurance so may get it started that way.

actually it does really hurt to go to the loo at the moment and still having minor bleeding on and off. :(

It's great to hear how physical therapy can help endometriosis too.

I don't really get it, I don't live in the US anyway,

Physical therapy helps to free up the scar tissue in the abdomen and make the myofascia that surrounds the organs and attaches to the muscles to move more freely, be more pliable, and produce less discomfort.

from all the research papers iv read the only proper treatment option for adhesions is surgery
