Dealing with anti vaxxer

So I am obviously extremely vulnerable and have had both Pfizer jabs a while ago and still being very cautious and not mixing with people much-definitely not going to restaurants just yet.

Anyway the point of my post is that I obviously want to meet my own family regularly but I have a VERY close relative who believes all the anti vaccine conspiracy theories out there and I know that even being vaccinated you can still be a carrier and that the idea is that I won’t become so severely ill- but should I be concerned that this person doesn’t want the vaccine (as I said a very close relative so can’t avoid) or would it have more of an effect on them rather than me?

I think I know the answer but I just wanted confirmation from others…

Hi Iram,

This is a really tough one. I believe that in theory, being vaccinated means you have less chance of becoming severely ill from Covid-19 and less chance of passing it onto others. However the new variant (delta) is considered much more transmissible (easy to pass on) and the vaccine isn't quite as effective against it.

If this relative is not somebody you live with, I would take sensible precautions like seeing them outdoors and not hugging them when you see them. If this is someone you live with, that is much harder to deal with. On the whole, covid is going to be with us for some time yet, so it's probably important for your mental health / emotional well-being to see people, go outdoors etc.

Ventilation, good hygiene, distance and masks are still vital to all of this, even if it may seem like many of the UK are rapidly forgetting this!

Feel free to email me if you have further questions/ concerns.

Thanks

Lucy

Dear Lucy,

Thank you so much for your reply. Fortunately this person doesn’t live with me. Both my husband and I are double jabbed and we don’t have children.

I have tried various ways to explain the “science behind it”, trusting the experts (as we would with any other illness) and all I can do is hope that in time they do understand the benefits and also the consequences of not being vaccinated. Obviously for purely selfish reasons I want them to have it done asap!

Thank you for passing on your email. I will use it if I have further questions or concerns.

Best wishes

Iram
