Does PBC have an affect on your weight? I see alot of people saying they need to lose weight. The Dr. told me to eat small meals to help with digestion.

I have started to put on weight in the past few months. I am not sure if it is PBC, URSO or if I am eating more rubbish and moving less. I suspect that it is my diet and exercise habits :-(

Hi,

Have you had your Thyroid checked? I was diagnosed with underactive thyroid last year which can cause you to put on weight. When told I had PBC last week my gp told me this is probably what caused my thyroid to pack up in the first place.

Hi, I have weigh issues since taking steroids and urso for PBC/AIH overlap..all I know is that when I take urso I gain weight. I have tested this out by not taking it for a week; but the steroids definitely cause weight gain I have put on 3.5 stones since diagnosis in April 2012 but I am pleased to say that I joined slimming world 8 weeks ago and have lost 1.5 stones. I feel this is because i refuse to let the fatigue hold me back and I go to salsa once a week and I walk... this helps. Also my consultant has agreed to let me try and drop the steroids. This has to be done gradually. I also take mercaptopurine for the AIH.

I also have hashimotos disease which is an auto immune thyroid problem. If you look on this site you will see that some have posted about urso and weight gain. I would try and get active even if just a short walk each day. I know that with pbc the fatigue is sometimes debilitating...and we are told to rest..but that's not always the best solution.

xxconniefused.

Hi, I am almost the same as coniefused. I was diagnosed in 2009 and have PBC/AIH ovelap. I was put on 8 steroid tablets a day for the AIH and put on 4 and a half stone. I was then weaned down to one tablet a day. I was told I would have to continue taking one steroid tablet a day and azathaprine. The azathaprine did not suit me and I refused to takesteroids any longer. I could not cope with the moon face and was worried about the long term effects. I was then given mercaptopurine to take. Once I was off the steroids I managed to lose 3 stone. I stopped taking the urso and managedo lose another half a stone which I have since put back on. I am now taking the urso again. I too always go out for a walk most days at least 2-3 miles. When I have time, I also do an aerobics video at home and a toning video. It doesn't help with me losing weight but it makes me feel better and gives me more energy.
