Hello Lisacj.

I have a Reader's Digest Guide to Natural Healthcare and looked up grape seed extract. I've only seen this listed on a hair conditioner I have prior to your question.

The guide I have lists certain conditions and health problems plus there is half the guide with health supplements. I've not looked through the whole book of course so this grape seed extract is new to me.

I have copied out a chunk of the text for you. I can't find anything anywhere about who can and cannot take grape seed extract. One thing I'd check though is you stated 'old jar', I'd check the use by date on it if you are planning on taking. From my point of view I'm not sure I'd take this supplement and most others also unless I thought I was taking it for some specific health problem it was related to (ie I started taking milk thistle last year due to the fact it is used for people with liver related conditions. I think my bloods are showing a change due to addition of this and urso).

This grape seed extract doesn't appear to be anything that would have a bad effect on the system and as you have stated you have an eye problem so it just might be worth a try but I can't say as I'm no medic. Here is the text from the book:-

"Common uses: Treats blood vessel disorders. Protects against damage to vision. Lessens the risk of heart disease and cancer. Reduces the fate of collagen breakdown in the skin.

It belongs to a group of plant substances called flavanoids – antioxidants which protect the body’s cells from damage by unstable oxygen molecules called free radicals.

Major benefits: Many practitioners find it a beneficial supplement for almost any type of vascular insufficiency as well as for conditions that are associated with poor vascular function, including diabetes, variscose veins, some cases of importence, numbness and tingling in the arms and legs and even painful leg cramps.

Additional benefits: Relief from allergy syptons is another benefit of the extract, it inhibits the release of sympton-causing compounds such as histamine, which, in turn, he;ps to control a variety of allergic reactions, from hay fever to urticeria. The extract also blocks the release of prostoglandins, chemicals involved in the allergic reactions and in pain and inflammation particularly that of the menstrual disorder called endiometriosis.

How to take: For antioxidant protection, take 100mg daily. For therapeutic benefits, doses are usually 200mg daily. Choose supplements that are standardised to contain 92% to 95% proantnthocyanidins, or OPCs.

After 24hrs., only about 28% of grape seed extrac’s active components remina in the body so it is important to take supplements at the same time every day, particularly when they are used to combat disease.

Possible side effects: No side effects from taking grape seed extract have been reported, and no toxic reactions have been noted."

Let us know if you did take the grape seed extract.
