Hi there haventaclue,

Oh yes!! My hangovers were really bad for a day at the beginning, then for two days at the beginning of last year. When it got to being ill for a week I finally hung up my wine glass last July after husbs 50th. I haven't had a drink since then and although I still suffer with tiredness I haven;t been really ill since. I was dreading Christmas without mulled wine and Baileys but honestly didn't miss it at all. I never sat down and wished for a glass - three young boys and a husband who didn't want to drink if I didn't really helped me!

Sam, it is wonderful for you that you have the support you have from your husband and sons.

Haventaclue, I never was much of a drinker, but did enjoy an occasional cocktail. When I found out I had PBC which involved the liver, I gave up drinking for good. Why stress an already stressed organ? There are sulfites in wine and that is probably what is causing the headaches.

Hi there

I have the occasional drink which my consultant agreed was ok. I will have a glass of lager, an irish coffee. I had sherry and port over Christmas. However, I never drink wine. I have never been able to tolerate it for as far back as I can remember. If I ever had a glass, the next thing I would be snoring my head off fast asleep. If I go out socialising, I have non alcoholic lager or just water with leom as I dont like soft drinks. At home I will have a glass of Schloer if I am entertaining so that I feel I am drinking socially without actually drinking alcohol. Its a psycological thing for me.

Yes right before I was told my lab/ blood work was elevated I would have a couple drinks and become very sick :( , said to heck with this and haven't had a drink in 3 years :))

I think probably alcohol takes a different effect when one has a compromised liver and especially then knowing you have PBC and the fact that the liver is taking a bit of strain if one does partake of alcohol.

I know I've never been a party girl, nothing heavy all my adult life and I didn't actually notice any bad effects prior to starting with the itch in early 2010 if I had an one or two drinks. I quit even having the odd drink when I got my first abnormal LFT and it is something that does not bother me at all as for me was a case of you don't miss what you never really had. My husband likes the couple pints when we go a walk and stop off at a country pub and he has admitted that for him, having done this over the years, at least several pints over the week, he would find it very hard to quit alcohol if he had something like this.

I still drink at social events but I don't know why because I do feel odd the next day!!

I suffer with a very dry burning mouth with certain foods, toothpastes and definately alcohol! Also I experience pain in my right side where the liver is so it's obviously stressed due to alcohol. In my defence there are many foods that do this as well!! Fortunately I don't go out drinking very often!

If I have one glass of wine it feels like I have had a bottle! It takes me about 2 days to feel normal, if there is an occasion where every one is drinking I may have one wine spritzer. I always say I am driving (I don't go out much but it helps) not that I don't drink it saves the questions that I am not prepared to give answers to. I have found one drink that does not affect me Guinness! It looks odd at the table when others have wine but I say it is my drink of choice:-) like theres is white or red...... Hope haventaclue you find a drink that does not make you feel hung over like I have for the odd time you want to join in a celebration.

Same here its not worth it is it , Its not just the wine its any alcohol Might try the guiness its supposed to be full of goodness.. Ive never been much of a drinker , but like you say on the odd occasion ... Its become a running joke with my family and friends as I would be sozzled after one drink and couldnt face another or yes dilute it with lemonade so I could hardly taste it,, but I would still feel very ill a couple of hours later ,, A capfull of Ameretto in a coffee is not to bad for me .no ill effects .

Cheers

Haventaclue: It could be the sulfites you are reacting to, or you might be like me in that I tested out allergic to brewer's yeast as well as to baker's yeast! Headaches can be a symptom of a food allergy.
