Just a question to ask how many of us were diagnosed with digetive disorders previously to our PBC/AIH.

It would be interesting to find out just how many.

For me it was AFTER PBC dx. I have GERD and ulcer.

I have GERD, but that is caused by my Scleroderma

They found i had a hiatus hernia after being diagnosed with PBC. Sometimes the acid reflux is awful.

I started with acid reflux a year to 18 months before diagnosis.

I had an endoscopy about 2yrs ago and they found i had a hernia so i was prescriped omaprazole. I also have acid reflux which is awful. I was diagnosed with PBC in sept 2011.

I developed acid reflux a few years after I was diagnosed with PBC - and I agree, acid reflux IS awful.

I was diagnosed with acid reflux due to a hiatis hernia before the pbc and if i dont take the lansoprazole daily i suffer badly with the acid refux.

I have acid reflux and I had it before I was diagnosed, but then I was told that I could of had PBC for years before it was diagnosed as I had the itch as well but was just getting told it was eczema and indigestion before and given cream ( that was no good) and zantac.

I was told I had acid reflux for the last 6 years and took Nexium for it although the pain continued. Then I was told that it was my gallbladder and had it removed last year. Still had pain and finally ended up in the hospital when the pain killers stopped working. After having an endoscopy done they found I had a block in my common bile duct and put a stint in. I was diagnosed with PBC shortly after that. Now I don't take any medication for acid reflux.

I was having huge problems for months with very bad diarohea and stomach cramps, very bad acid reflux as well, I have stopped taking all medicines for the PBC and since I stopped them I feel " normal" no sore stomach, anything, I told my doctor and she just took them off my prescription, when I looked back I realised all my problems started after taking the Urso, Mind you, I havn't seen my consultant yet, anyone else stopped taking Urso?

I have had GERD for about 7 years. I was diagnosed with PBC in February this year and, following an endoscopy in March, was told that I have a Hiatis Hernia.

I usually take Ranitadine but swap this for Omeperzole for a month or two when my symptoms flare up. According to my specialist the symptoms from the GERD are not related to my PBC, I'm not sure I agree.

I've had acid reflux for years before being diagnosed with pbc. Had my gallbladder remover 4 years ago, pain still there and acid still bad.

I was diagnosed with GERD before my diagnosis of PBC, but my diagnosis should have been made at least in 1997, instead of 2003. I also have a hernia. I think fosamax caused some of my problem. I too, take nexium, and sometimes have to use Calafate, which is used to treat ulcers. The urodiol does bother my stomach.

it looks like quite a few of us do have this. Just wondered if it would be possible to do a poll on it ?

Looks like so manyof us on here have had digestion/reflux problems before our PBC/AIH diagnosis..now comes the question...Do You Think medications taken to treat our gastric issues could be responsible? I too lanzoprazole for 3 years before. I now take omeprozole and am waiting for mygall bladder removed, which I think will help.

in my case I would say no. My liver function tests were out since before 2006 but only stated the reflux symptoms/meds in 2010.

But looking at it the other way could our livers have caused the acid reflux/ hernias?

WOW...we have so many questions and underlying similarities...I wonder if this could be looked into..to find connections and better treatment/medication for us.

I had the itching and the reflux prior to being diagnosed with PBC. I know that I had the itching at least 3 years prior to being diagnosed. I spent lots of money on different soaps, shampoos, laundry detergent, fabric softener, lotions. I take omeprazole in the morning and zantac at bedtime and I still have to sleep with my head elevated. If I end up sleeping without my head elevated, it won't be long and I will wake up from the awful taste in my mouth. I am considering checking with the physician to see about the surgery for GERD.

Funny you should mention that I had itching for at least 12 months before I was diagnosed..but it was not constant, it was usually at night and felt like as if crawling bugs on my skin..still have it now and not on urso..being treated as if autoimmune hepatitis, but when I go back in a couple weeks to see specialist, I will mention it to her.

Like you I changed soaps, detergent..even paid out for egyption cotton bed linen...this is wonderful,by the way....don't use duvet...warmth makes my itch worse.

I have had gastritis for a long time really with acid reflux......makes ya wonder...

When I look at all these similar answers regarding gastritis etc....I realise that perhaps everything is connected.....I mean we see a gastroenterologist for liver......and liver plays a huge part in digesting certain foods....our gall bladder is linked to our liver also...again a big role to play in digestion...I cant say for certain that our digestive disorders are responsible as I am not a specialist..but, I certainly am not ignorant to the fact that it looks very connected to me.

Perhaps, mor research needs to be done...we definitely need treatments that work well and give us chance of a decent life expectancy....

I too was diagnosed with hiatal hernia had camera put down my throat about four years ago .I tried omeprazole but realised this tablet gave me nausea and made me sick . I was diagnosed with Pbc March 2011 although not on urso as only have AMA and elevated Igm but have been told by consultant I'm symptomatic for Pbc liver function tests are monitored every six months .there does seem to be a lot of us with hernias and Pbc . Also my partner suffers acid reflux although he has not been told he has a hernia but he too finds after trying my emaprozole that he too felt the sickness and nausea so he too cannot take them is it a coinsisdence ? that this medication makes both of us sick By the way he swears by peppermint tea hope this helps

Hi so many of us with thes digestive troubles...I still wonder if medication is anything to do with it. I also am concerned by the number of people who take these acid busting tablets. I have been doing a lot of research since my diagnosis because let's face it, we are all different and our doctors simply do not know enough about our condition. I have found along the way all kinds of evidence regarding stomach acid.

One thing that stood out was from my nutritional therapist when she said that we need acid to digest our food, if we have little or none, how can we expect our bodies to get the nutrients it needs.Omeprozole and lanzoprazole completely remove this acid from our stomach...is there any wonder we have such problems with gastritis.....she also said that in most cases, there is usually not enough acid which is what causes problems.

I have been given omeprozole from the hospital and they had me on 40mg three times per day. I have gently reduced the dosage and am on one 20mg tablet every other day. I will do this until next week when I will stop them and only take a little gaviscon if I get any reflux. I am looking at all the alternatives and will speak to my specialist before I take anything. I have just had enough...how much more punnishment do we have to put our bodies through before natural options are offered to us.

Well I first went in for digestive issues to my GI and he diagnosed me with PBC just recently. Just had my egd and colonoscopy done yesterday which they found erosions compatible with gastritis. But they did biopsies which I haven't heard back from yet.

I also have Lupus and Sjogrens which are autoimmune. Is anyone familiar with Crohn's which is autoimmune as well? Thinking it could be a possibility also. Coincidence? What do you think?

Thank you for your input,

KAuthement
