Itchy Scalp Please help

Hi all,

I have for the past 2 months experienced a lot of itch in my hair especially at the back of my head. And whenever I lay my head on the pillow it itches and burns even more. I have noticed the itch gets worse in winter, hot baths (sauna), spices (especially red chilli and turmeric). Does anyone have this same problem and could you please help me out. Thanks in advance to any forthcoming response.

You might want to see a dermatologist. My scalp was itchy & I was scratching lots. Anyway, doctor diagnosed me with scalp psoriasis which is also considered an autoimmune condition. Treated it with a topical antibiotic & some other ointment. Both were prescriptions.

I have PBC and last summer developed rashes/itchy skin all over, recently travelled to scalp. Diagnosed with chronic eczema. Tried all sorts - biopsy, steroids, creams, antihistamines, recently had a patch test. Now this is interesting as I am allergic to 3 things, which are found in so many products from household to cosmetics, shampoos etc (linalool, Myroxylon Pereirae, Methyldibromi Glutaronitrile). Have now switched and my scalp has stopped itching. Now referred for light therapy. Maybe be worth seeing if avoiding these helps you all.

Hi, what shampoo do you use now?

And doctor suggested I use Neutrogena T Gel shampoo which helps with the psoriasis. That’s available over the counter.

Thanks Ninjagirl. Did doctor tell if any dietary changes were necessary? I purchased T-Gel and will use it tommorow.

Nope. Condition does not relate to diet. She did tell me me that people with scalp psoriasis are also prone to developing psoriatic arthritis. So I am cognizant of these things. Hopefully it doesn’t manifest; knock on wood.

Thanks but is there an underlying problem to all of this (Thyroid, adrenal fatigue, liver dysfunction) or just something that happens as you cross a certain age. Hearing a lot of autoimmune problems everywhere these days.

It is just genetics; she didn’t mention any underlying cause.

With more advanced medical techniques & routine testing, more autoimmune issues are flagged vs in the past where maybe without symptoms would not be detected. Therefore, I think it isn’t that there is more incidences; rather they are discovered more frequently & earlier. I think this is the case with pbc.

Only place I ever suffered from itching was my scalp. Started using medicated shampoo (Vosene) and it went away.

Thanls Gioielli, I purchased Nutrogena T-Gel today and will try it out. If it doesnt work will get Vosene. Btw do you know why the itch happens?

I have very itchy scalp too especially at the back of my head, my GP told me to use Nizoral 2.5 I leave it in my hair for about half an hour before washing it out and that has helped with the itch.

Do you have what looks like your scalp peeling or flaking. I had it but it didn’t itch. Prednisone cleared it up

Thanks Jenny. Slight flaking, does stress or diet have anything to do with it?

I finally went to a dermatologist and she said that it was dermatitis. I was diagnosed with pbc and aih after. The dermatologist ordered ointments and shampoos that didn’t work. Tea tree oil did Wouk but prednisone cleared it right up

I have the same problem, I rub tea tree oil into my scalp 2-3 times a week.

Hi, do you use pure tea tree oil only or mix it with others on your scalp?

Just the tea tree oil. I do it at night so it's on my scalp while I'm sleeping, then wash it out in the morning with Paul Mitchell tea tree oil shampoo.

You're welcome! I've only been diagnosed with pbc this past March, but I've had the scalp issue for years, I'm so happy to finally have a reason for it.

Omg! I thought it was me! I too have this but spots on my head hurt. I've tried vinegar rinses, baby shampoo , not blow drying my hair , emu shampoo and finally selson blue shampoo. And that one gives me the most relief. I was afraid to go in public because people would think I had lice... even was checked for it ! I asked my GP about it he said the cause was winter dryness . My thought... he doesn't know what he is talking about. Hope this helps.

Doctors today are a waste of time and money imho. Internet forums and listening to the right ppl has proved more helpful

GP’s won’t know. Skin issues should be addressed by the dermatologists.
