Skinny Liver - book by K. Kirkpatrick and I. Hanouneh

Has anyone read the book Skinny Liver? It’s written by a nutritionist and a doctor from the Cleveland Clinic. While the book is written for readers who suffer from fatty liver disease or are trying to avoid liver disease, it does mention PBC and several other diseases connected to the liver. I found it to be a quick and informative read and took to heart the suggestions on what foods to embrace and avoid, and the impact of exercise, stress, and rest. I recommend it. Hope this is helpful!

All the best.

What I liked was that lot of the preventative and care tips touch on one of the main conversations we have on this site - regarding how we can take the best possible care of our livers or as the book says “showing the liver some love” - all in one place. For me the medical discussion of the liver was helpful. We all wish we weren’t quite so fashionable but liver-related diseases are quite “in” right now in the world of medical research and there is so much progress going on every day, it gives me hope. There is good discussion of the connection between the gut and the liver and ideas for eating and drinking habits to encourage optimal health, as well as discussion of the positive and negatives of both traditional and non traditional medications and herbs. Great diet advice for making the best choices for liver and overall health without committing to any kind of drastic diet strategy. Also good reminders about the impact of stress, exhaustion, and dehydration on liver health. The book also discusses traditional and non traditional approaches to self care and the positive benefits of exercise - including some yoga stretches that are good for the liver. It does feel good to stretch out my right side! Similarly, I did not know that in traditional Chinese medicine anger is the emotion associated with liver and the book suggests things like meditation to help address stress. While the target audience is for those at risk or suffering from NASH/NAFLD/Fatty Liver Disease, it’s a great overview of all things in the liver and I was particularly grateful to the authors for weaving autoimmune diseases like ours into the fabric of the book (Obetecholic acid and Urso both mentioned). Also honestly it gave me that comforting feeling that I also get from this site - there are many of us who share what seems to be a rare disorder/concern. Unlike many of Skinny Liver’s targeted audience there’s really nothing we can ultimately do about the effects of our disease beyond being proactive about treatment, but we can all feel better about doing everything we can to help ourselves stay healthy. Gosh oops - you asked for quick and i’ve rambled on and on - hope this helps! (I should submit this to Amazon right?)

Thanks for suggestion to read it. Since I've been diagnosed with PBC/AIH Overlap syndrome several of my friends are doing all they can to protect their liver.
