Dilemma, what can I do if I am allergic to treatment of PBC. The pills cotain sodium lauryl sulfate a big allergen for me. What other meds similar to URSO can I take or natural treatment. I am unsure I can find something that I am not allergic to? Currently, I am on watch as Gastro agrees that I should not take med unless my blood lab changes. All liver readings normal except Ama m2 at 90. Fibroscan showed normal liver, thank God.

The important thing is to follow your doctors advice. However have you looked up ingredients of both capsules and tablets in case they are different? URSO comes in both forms. The other treatment is Ocaliva.

Hi Sdone

I am also allergic to urso and for now I am on fenofibrates. I am also allergic to statins which I was prescribed after a heart attack. I believe the fenofibrates also reduce cholesterol, although they are nowhere near as effective as statins.

I was allergic to Urso. I now take Ocaliva. Also, my abdominal ultrasound showed my liver to be perfectly normal, and fibroscan indicated mild scarring in my duct only.

Different manufacturers use different fillers. I took urso capsules for a while, and the only filler was cornstarch, mixed in with the urso. The capsules were partially pink colored, and I'm sensitive to colorings, so I emptied the contents into a clear gelatin capsule (per the pharmacist's okay; it did get tedious doing that, however!) I'm very sensitive to fillers, colorings, etc., and thoroughly research which brands use ingredients I can tolerate. I start with the pharmacy and see what brands they're able to get in stock, and go from there, looking up the inactive ingredients in each brand, then have the doctor specify which brand to fill my prescription with. It's worked well for me so far. Good luck!
