I have been told I have ascites.. not much fluid but still very worried..I have had cirrhosis for three years and had a bleed..varises have been banded and almost gone but I read that ascites are the final stage of cirrhosis...I am fast becoming over the cut off age in UK for transplant. My consultant is hard to see as lots of appointments have been cancelled for everyone in my hospital...its all up to the GP who is very good but as she says she is not the expert.

Sorry to hear your situation. I understand ascites can be caused by a lot of different things and can be treated in some cases. You could consider phoning your consultant's medical secretary and asking for advice - if you can't get an appointment the Doctor might be able to phone you. I understand the main risk with ascites is infection. So if you if you start to feel really unwell I'd go to A&E if I were you. You could always try phoning the PBC foundation I know they can't give medical advice but they're always been supportive and reassuring in my experience. Take care.

Probiotics and manage that stress. I know it is hard, but I personally think it is our number one enemy.

So sorry. How long have you had PBC. Are they giving you anything new to take?

Hello, yes it has been awhile since I have posted or replied to anyone. Anyways, I am stage F4 cirrhosis with grade 2 varicies. Close to two years ago in May I found out about my varicies due to puking straight black blood in the middle of the night. Scariest thing I've dealt with by far during this PBC journey. I went to the ER & they transported me to a hospital that had the equipment needed for my situation. I ended up with three areas actively bleeding, they were banded. Then I was placed on what we call a step down unit of the heart hospital. This is a step under the intensive care unit. I went through a 2 pint blood transfusion & remained in the hospital until my hemoglobin level was where it needed to be. I did have some ascities after due to all the stress & worry. Which was unavoidable considering my situation. All I can tell you is keep your appointments & procedures needed to keep things under control. At the moment I do not have the ascities, but yes, it could happen again. If your specialists keep canceling your appointments I would try to find another heptologist who can tend to your healthcare needs. In our state we cannot just be shoved in & out of the office without concern. I have my bloods ran once a month & see my GI every six months, I travel to see my heptologist every three months. My heptologist will be the one who places me on the transplant list when the time comes for me. I'd be very insistent with your doctors to keep up with your care as you need. Also, I was placed on a low dose beta blocker to keep the hypertension off of the portal vein of my liver & I take Lasix everyday to help with keeping the ascities at bay. I hope my story helps you. I learned to hard way. I pray for us all during this crazy disease called PBC. As I always try to say & do...

Stay Strong❣️
