Hi Chocolate11,

I'm not taking a "multivitamin" as such but take individual vitamin supplements as I prefer to get a better quality ones which are GMO free and Organic, without the other filler ingredients. I buy the Natures Plus Source of Life Garden ones: Vitamin D3 5000IU, Vitamin C 500mg daily - u can take 1g, and Vitamin K2, which helps with Vit D3 absorption. They are all available online or in health shops such as Whole Foods :-) x

Ok thank you for your advice.

Hello Chocolate11.

I don't take any multivitamins. I have in the past had short course of iron tablets. I know when I had a blood check several years ago the GP said my vitamins and minerals were normal. When I was diagnosed with PBC (December 2010) the consultant did his own blood checks and in his letter he put that my Vitamin was 'a bit low' but he was not recommending I take supplements. I rang his secretary to find out what this meant as in figure and I had an on the line reading. The following year a recheck after we had our British summer my levels were found to be adequate.

What I am saying is that if there is no need to take then my way of thinking is don't. A doctor might advise which is obviously different. I know some overdosing of certain vitamins are not harmful (Vitamin C for eg) as we excrete in urine but some can be do if overdosed on.

My concern re buying vitamins and minerals is the filling ingredients to them. A lot can contain certain artificial ingredients like sweeteners (I tried to avoid pre-diagnosis and still do) and colourings. The one reason I hate taking urso every day is due to the addition of the fillers in the tablets.

There is a liquid multivitamin mix with or without the addition of iron that I know Holland & Barratt (if you are in the UK), called Flori something or other I think (check out the Holland & Barr website as sure it is on there). The ingredients are listed.

Also might be a good idea to contact your doctor or his/her secretary and ask the question?

Hi Chocolate11

I hope you are well today.

To echo the sound advice already posted I would suggest you check this out with your Consultant, or Gp in their absence.

My Consultant recently prescribed me a high dose of Vitamin D to help my calcium absorption. I have been advised to carry on taking supplements but it is a bit of a minefield buying over the counter supplements as it can be difficult to know the quality of the product. Nobody wants to give their liver an added task of breaking down fillers often used in supplements.

I recently posted about vitamin d tablets and I got lots of advice. In some ways I trust the experience of the people who have my condition more than my Gp. So as always we can benefit from the wisdom of our pbc community who have already tried and tested supplements.

Hi Chocolate, I've been taking Boots multivitamins (A to Z complete vitamins and minerals) for many years with no bad effects. They are not soluble but I wouldn't think that would make any difference but you could ask the Boots pharmacist to make sure.

It is like a drinks you put the tablet in the water. It is an oranage drink.

No, it's not like that. It's a small tablet that you have to swallow (quite easily) with water; one tablet a day. We buy them from Boots on-line in tubs of 180.
