My ferritine level is very low (12) and I have been thinking whether I should have more iron throuhg injections (I suffer from hair loss, muscle cramps etc). How about you all with PCB, any experiences about this? Is it safe with this PBC to take injections?

Iron injections - are they safe?
Hello saarima.
I have only had a short course of iron tablets on two occasions since 2010 when I was diagnosed with this PBC. In my case it was explained as anaemia caused by nosebleeding. I did have a pin sized graze inside my nose but that was treated over time at ENT.
Only a doctor might be able to say here regarding iron in injection form. I remember back in the latter part of the 1980s my gran had iron injections for a short spell as she was said to be severely depleted. She ate like a sparrow and thinking, her diet wasn't that rich in iron. She had the pale palor of anaemia too. She was fine afterwards, it wasn't repeated after the short course.
I am in the UK and usually it is up to a doctor which form of iron is dispensed due to how you are with a blood test for ferritin. I was just offered a course of tablets, never had any other suggestions made.
Hi saarima
If you are unable to get this information from you doctor or if no one with this experience is on the forum the PBC Foundation has a helpline which you can either telephone or email. If you are not already a member it is free to join and you can link to their page via the icon above.
Whilst waiting for your injections if you decide to have them you may like to take a look at this link which describes some of the foods good for boosting ferritine. Please note that vitamin C taken at the same time as these foods will boost the process. For instance boiled egg for breakfast with orange juice etc.

Ask your doctor as too much iron causes liver damage and the supplements have to be calculated out by a doctor so I would ask before starting any.
