Has anyone heard that drinking coffee is actually good for the liver?

I was told this by my heptologist and decided to do a bit of research online. I found the following article which upholds this theory at this link: medicalnewstoday.com/articl...

It states that 'researchers are suggesting that drinking two or more cups of coffee every day can reduce the risk of death from liver cirrhosis by 66%' They also conclude their study by noting that it "provides further impetus to evaluate coffee as a potential therapeutic agent in patients with cirrhosis."

Hi, Maribella,

Sorry to say, but following the links beneath the link you provided gets you to this one: medicalnewstoday.com/articl...

I copied & pasted this line from the article that sums it up well:

"They found drinking coffee was linked to a reduced risk for PSC, but not PBC."

On the plus side, the article did not say that drinking coffee was bad for PBC.

Hi Kind_of_crazy, thanks for your reply, I don't know what happened there, the link should go to an article titled 'Drinking coffee linked to decreased liver cirrhosis death risk' The link should be medicalnewstoday.com/articl...

I hope that's right now!

I googled 'Coffee good for liver' and the information came up. I didn't see the one you found which is interesting too. I'm not a big coffee drinker, I love my cup of tea but will consider having a coffee more often if it helps :)

Hi, again,

Sorry to be confusing. Your link in the original post was correct. I found the one about coffee and PBC at the bottom of your article/link.

You know the ones that say:

Your link regarding coffee relates to cirrhosis: particularly cirrhosis caused by alcohol and hepatitis. I just clicked through some more links until I got to an article more relevant to PBC & coffee. :)

I just realised that you wrote that you followed my link to the link you posted. I picked it up wrong. I'm having one of my senior moments.

Apparently an article published last summer (2013) stated that coffee was good for preventing cirrhosis. But only if you have say a couple cups a day and not go overboard. Without checking the article you have posted sounds like one that I posted on here quite recently (if you check my past posting, probably in Posts, you may see it and also if you go further back (around 12 months) then I did post another one from the WDDTY site where I have been a member for some years.

Just reading further, the article was due to liver and I didn't read anything about PBC.

I believe that coffee can perhaps aid the liver slightly but could well be a case that with PBC that is active it sort of works against what coffee perhaps could achieve if that makes sense.

I'll continue to drink a couple cups of coffee a day. I was never a big coffee drinker pre-PBC but I think early morning it is a bit of a pick-me-up for the start of the day and then just before my evening meal, it somehow stops me flagging. (I tend to switch to red tea early evening, caffeine free and it hydrates as opposed to rehydrating like standard tea.)

Hi Peridot, thanks for the information, I'm new to all this, having just been diagnosed in January this year. I'll definitely look up your posts on the coffee. There's so much information to take in about this disease, it's daunting. I've really appreciated all your research and dedication to sharing what you have found out on this forum. Your posts have helped answer many questions I've had about PBC. Thank's a mil.

Hello expecially Maribella.

This is the article I originally posted (there was also another on my postings) from WDDTY (What Doctors Don't Tell You) website:-

'Drinking coffee halves risk of liver cancer

23 October 2013

Drinking coffee every day reduces your chances of developing liver cancer. Three cups a day halve the risk of HCC, or hepatocellular carcinoma, the most common type of liver cancer.

HCC is the third most lethal form of cancer, but your chances of developing it can be reduced when you drink coffee, new research suggests. People who regularly drink coffee can reduce their risk by 40 per cent, but the risk drops to 50 per cent in those who drink three cups a day.

The link between coffee and liver cancer has already been noted, but researchers from Milan in Italy have included the very latest studies to confirm earlier findings. The finding adds to the growing health benefits of coffee. Earlier studies have shown it helps prevent diabetes and cirrhosis of the liver.
