B12 Micro Needle Patch?

I read an article about development of a patch delivery for vaccines. Because I had nothing else to do, I sent and email to one of the companies developing this technology. Here is what I wrote:

I just read about your vaccine patch products. I was wondering if patches could be used for medical issues other than vaccine delivery. I have pernicious anemia and need to get shots of vitamin B12 monthly. I know B12 deficiency doesn't sound like a major problem but in the past pernicious anemia was a slow and very painful death with no cure. Anyway, I was wondering if B12 could be delivered to the body via a patch. It would be very convenient for people like me who have to go their doctor's office once a month for a shot. If your company ever decides to research B12 supplementation using patches I would like to volunteer as a research subject.

I got an almost immediate response from the company, VAXESS:

Hi Maureen,

Thank you for the note. This is a very interesting application.

Do you happen to know what your monthly dosage of B12 is?

For now, we are focused exclusively on vaccines given our limited bandwidth, but our hope is to rapidly expand beyond vaccines over the next 3-5 years.

Thanks for the note,

I know B12 patches wouldn't be the least expensive way to get a dose, but think of how convenient it would be to just slap on a patch once in a while.

How smart and brilliant that idea was. 👍 Good that you wrote them.

Let's hope they will develop such a patch and that it will be a successful way to deliver B12 to PA patients. I could imagine a lot of other therapeutic usages of those patches.

What else do you have in stock when having nothing else to do? 😉

I'm retired now so I need to find ways to keep myself out of trouble. As the saying goes, Idle hands . . . 😄

Ah, I see. Still a couple of years before I will retire, but I'm already thinking about it and I don't believe that I will be bored - like you, as I assume.😉

Wish you good health and plenty of time to do all the things you can do now.

Thanks for posting that! I have contacted several authors over the years about a range of issues - some have ignored me, others have been helpful.

I see a plus and a minus for this approach - if it works as well as hoped.

Plus: It avoids the cost and waste of ampoules, needles, syringes, their wrapping, etc.

Minus: It adds the waste of its own wrapping and the needle array. It would be great if it could be made of something compostable.

There are couple if old posts in this forum and others probably have used them but looks like not be beneficial since B12 molecules are large and can't pass through skin patch. I have no idea why it can't be passed just I'm remembered sine old posts in this forum. In the meantime sine sources claim the only way to heal symptoms us to to inject. I didn't know why but looks like it's not bioavailable through other way. I wish there was other way since Everytime vI inject my symptoms get worsen for almost a day. After six months injection but without sticking to any regime frequency. Almost twenty days ago I used to inject everyday but my body showed Iron deficiency and then I stopped for building up it and then started over but in second day of injection my symptoms badly got worsened and reset my symptoms to couple if months ago. I hope other ways if delivery without pain can save peoples life

The previous comments on patches were, from memory - I haven't checked them again, regarding various composiitons which pretty much sit on top of the skin.

This new patch has an array of needles. The size of the B12 molecule is not an issue - it is far smaller than the punctures in the skin. I think you'll find that many vaccines contain molecules much larger than B12.

I know there are some new patches with array of fine needles for insulin and contraceptive. And even for some other medication like blood thinners which amazingly working interactively and I was also thinking about them long time ago for B12 delivery but I don't really know why sine articles compare oral sublingual and even nasal spray they can't be helpful in nerve repair. Why just painful injection which relapses symptoms can repair nerves? It seems other ways of delivery can't make B12 bioavailable for nerve repair. I have these patches help us some day

An older reply which spoke of micro-needle array patches:
