Tinnitus after beginning supplementation?

Hey everyone,

Has anybody had an experience of getting tinnitus after beginning b12 supplementation?

As a quick reminder, I'm vegan and my level was 159 when I got tested in mid April. I was also anemic. All other organ function checked out and good. I started supplementation on 5/1 and in 18 days, I've had 12 1000mcg shots of either cyanocobalamin or methylcobalamin along with heavy oral supps of tablets and sublinguals.

If you look at my past posts, I've had some muscle twitching, weakness, and now tinnitus. I suspected it was hypokalemia so I went to the doctor on Thursday and my electrolytes were relatively normal and anemia looked a lot better (look at my previous posts for more details). Now I'm waking up thirsty with pretty loud tinnitus.

Has anybody else experienced something like this? Maybe I've overdone it on the b12. I'm taking a few days off now and will start off with lower dose tablet (100 mcg, csnt find 50s) as my b12 def is not from PA and is from diet.

Any info is appreciated.

So I’ve had quite a bit of experience with tinnitus. First I thought is was from nerve repair. As my B12 levels increased, it would come and go with each injection.

I had several hearing test a year ago and the loss in high frequency from work related abuse of my ears over the last thirty years was then treated with hearing aids.

Boosting the signals gave the brain something to actually listen to instead of making up sounds of the tinnitus that it was doing when it got no signals.

Balance issues and vertigo can also occur with hearing loss.

There are apps for cell phone now that are free and allow you to conduct your own hearing test in the privacy of your own closet.

I didn’t believe the first Dr, did my own test, got the same results and then went to another Dr and had the same results and got the hearing aids, they also work through the cell phone for mode and volume control. Can also listen online and receive phone calls through them.

Tinnitus is gone and I’ve not looked back.

Just had my annual retest, and hearing is just as bad. But tinnitus is gone.

Hey Alfa,

Yeah strange. My tinnitus has just come up recently after starting b12. I just think I have overdone it with the b12 and need to let my body filter some out before going back at it

Tinnitus is one of many b12 symptoms - welcome to the club! Symptoms come and go and some persist. My tinnitus came and went on about a six week basis and continued for around 18 months - I don’t get it anymore. My tinnitus, however, was one of the symptoms that took me to the doctor in the first place and led to my diagnosis.

Tinnitus can be caused by lots of things including b12. If you have b12 deficiency and get tinnitus there’s a link.

Yep, my tinnitus increased a lot after starting the B12 injections, 2 months on and it comes and goes. It's one of the early warning signs I get when my B12 symptoms are going to start playing up. Bearing in mind I've had tinnitus my entire life, it just worsened after the injections. Part of the healing process I'm assuming, but I do note with interest the reply from pvanderaa . All the best brother.

My tinnitus, and needing hearing aids, coincided with my other B12D symptoms such as burning feet. I was finally diagnosed with PA 2 1/2 years ago and been self-injecting for 2 years approx. My tinnitus has become more noticeable and I too put this down to nerve repair. As it disrupts my sleep I requested an appointment with an audiologist to see if there was any way to alleviate. The audiologist I finally saw a short while ago poo-pooed any connections with B12D when I mentioned this. Said that my tinnitus is caused by my brain removing all filters to extraneous noises as my hearing detoriated in order to let more sound get to my brain. Said that my continual 'mass of twittering birds' noise was the unfiltered sounds coming from my body. Suggested I wear my hearing aids for at 8 hours a day for brain to set up filters again and tinnitus should start to ease off eventually! Sounded reasonably logica and this explanation relates to @pvanderaa 's experience and I do feel that my tinnitus and loss of hearing are part and parcel of B12D. I was missed diagnosed for at least 2 years regarding other symptoms but its so hard to get to see a doctor with a holistic approach and with the knowledge to look at joining the dots.
