First self injection.

I ovecame the nerves yesterday and gave myself my first jab, having got my blood tests out of the way. It was absolutely fine but I would say to those that haven’t done this yet - don’t rush it and push the liquid in too fast as that DOES hurt a bit. Rather like the little punch you get from an anti tetanus jab. I WAS warned by several UTube videos but was so glad the needle went in without pain that I rushed.

I know how hard it is to do your first one, I was sweating & shaking for 2 hours before I did it.

I now find that if I stretch the skin while injecting, after rubbing the ampoule between my hands for a while to up the temperature while the alcoholic wipe area dries, It's now second nature & don't know why I was petrified to start with.

It’ll be another week before I can start them but I reckon I’ll be sweating too. Just hope I stay upright - Wouldn’t be good to faint with a needle sticking out of your leg !! 😂

After you have done it you can pat yourself on the back and know you have done something few others have. You might well have done something the practice nurse and even the doctor have never done. You can feel really superior.

I find the best way is nice & slow & not like most YouTube videos show you.

Kcbrecks is right, the sense of achievement once you've done it is amazing.

I even rang my mum & said if you don't hear from me by a certain time come round as I've passed out 😁

The thing that did it for me was having a word with myself!

I know it's usually the first sign of madness but, in this case I just said now look, you either do this, or you'll feel like death warmed up for the next 10 weeks waiting for your next 3 monthly one off the nurse!

That's the ridiculous laws for you in UK.

I overcame a phobia of needles & now feel the very best I've felt for many years & if I can do it, then anyone can do it!

That's useful to know. I did watch a youtube video which made it look quite easy (although also made me feel a bit sick).

I nearly passed out watching YouTube videos, as I nearly passed out watching anyone stick a needle in them.

In my case though, it was either do it, or just exist in pain.

Thankfully, I "manned up" & went for the first option, as so many have too 👍

I guess I’m lucky that mine seem to last for four weeks - at the moment - but I still don’t want to spend two thirds of my life brain-fogged and wobbling into things like door frames. People keep asking where the bruises come from.

I did it sitting down with a friend with me. She didn’t want to look (!) but helped me get the liquid pulled up into the syringe and was there in case I did faint or hit a blood vessel or something.
