POTASSIUM ADVICE PLEASE

I'm eating bananas and spinach but if I forget on any given day and need to take a quick vitamin instead, what is the best potassium supplement and amount to take? I get a bit giddy after my hydroxo injection, might just be nerves but thought maybe I'd take extra potassium just in case.

As always thanks to the folks on this amazing site that give their time so generously and freely.

It's really best to get pottassium from food. Baked potatoes with skin diary beet greens Diary ,meat ,raisins, avocados As you say bananas but you would need to eat about 6 if not eating other pottassium rich food. Supplements will only give approximately less than 100mg. You need about 4000 my a day I think. It must be dangerous to overdose and that's why supplements not as good as food. I've only seen it in some multivitamin in very low doses. Hope that helpful.

Coconut water is good too. Hold my nose and down the hatch after every injection! Can’t stand the stuff so only have it on day of injection!

Hi

Here in Switzerland I was prescribed KCl retard which is a supplement of 391mg (but only because I asked). I was told to take one every other day. I have to say I stopped last week, as after the last one I had arrhythmia, left sided chest pain, and a slow heart beat for me at this time. I felt truly awful!

It is quite dangerous to supplement potassium as you can get arrythmia. It's only if you are on diuretics you would supplement and it is then checked by your healthcare professional on a regular basis.

Thank you so much for your help, I guess, all things considered I will avoid the supplements and try to get it from food. It's always a concern wondering if I have got the balance right. I've had 30 injections and still feeling rough, but I've caught a nasty flu bug and that doesn't help as I feel permanently exhausted and giddy. Hope when the trees blossom I might blossom a bit too! Most people get plenty of potassium from their food.

If you had macrocytic anaemia, caused by a B12 deficiency, might you need extra potassium when you started B12 injections. And then only for a few weeks as the body put on a spurt of red cell formation. After that you need no more than anybody else, no matter how much you inject.

Thank you so much. Clear, concise and succinct as ever. I did have macrocytic anaemia but after 30 injections I guess the red cell formation must have improved but I'm still waiting for the energy and joie de vie to kick in! Must happen eventually! Best wishes.

Unfortunately it's not just the anemia that can cause fatigue.

I must have had close to 500 injections. I still get wrecked if I push myself too hard.

Still I would love to be able to get to the place where I can 'push myself too hard!'. I guess it's all relative, but there must be an answer for this crushing fatigue but maybe I'm expecting too much. After all, 'normal' people must get knackered when they overdo it. I just hope after 500 injections I get to nearly normal, I'm sick of being on the sidelines of life, an observer rather than a doer!

Dried prunes and dried apricots have potassium too and I put in my morning yoghurt.

I've had 28 injections since November. Like you I'm on the sidelines if not isolated at the moment. The weather is beautiful today hottest in February yesterday on record for this time of year. I've gother yet another headache for some reason?? I jections due tomorrow after 1 week (new regime) I don't think related but body must be adjusting. Hope you pick up soon

Hope you pick up soon too. I guess if nothing else, this life's journey has taught us compassion. Sure is lovely to see the sun, was actually sunbathing today; all added vit d gratefully received! We're at the beginning of our journey so have every reason to cling on to hope, it's so good to have that at last. Best wishes.
