Hi everyone... I received the results of my pernicious Anaemia Bloods back today and was wondering if anyone could help me understand them as I’m a little confused.

Could you let us know exactly what was tested please, so that we can help. For example is that result Folate, Intrinsic Factor or something else?

Intrinsic factor x

The range that you've given sounds more like folate, which is has a range of around 4-20 u/ml, rather than I.F. which is usually 0-6 u/ml. Are you sure that it is I.F and not folate?

I just checked my print out and I had folate done too that result was 9.01 UG/L [>5.3]

I've never heard of an I.F. range like that, they've always been in the 0-6 u/ml range, unless they have changed recently. Hopefully somebody else will be along soon to help you out. :)

Hi Churchy12 I'm not great with reading anti-intrinsic factor antibody test results but I think this means it is negative. The range for my area us 0-6U/ml too.

Unfortunately the anti-intrinsic factor antibody test is problematic - it is very specific (ie if you test positive you almost certainly have PA) but not very sensitive so it doesn't pick up everyone who is positive.

A negative result means you may or may not have pernicious anaemia as only positive in 40-60% of people who HAVE pernicious anaemia. See the link p500

What does your GP say?

Hi thank you for you reply, I am seeing the GP next week so I will be speaking to him. The problem I’ve had with my GP is that when I phone up I get the results over the phone and they always say ‘no further action’ but then when I get a print out of the results in the comments section it always says ‘below range’ but the doctor never follows up on my results. I get very frustrated so I’m seeing the head GP for my appointment this time.

the test has come back negative.

the range reflects the fact that it is difficult to distinguish between IF antibodies and some other chemicals in your blood that have a very similar weight. The result is that the test isn't very sensitive because it has to have quite a big range before you can be sure that you really are picking up IF antibodies, meaning that it gives false negatives 40-60% of the time depending on the exact test method.
