Acne type spots

Hi everyone...I started loading dose of b12 injections about 6 weeks ago. After a few injections I started to get acne type spots on my face . Originally I put this down to my new makeup and haven't used for a month. New spots have appeared ...dr prescribed hydrocortisone cream which has helped a little. I have been treated for hypothyroidism for many years and have only just picked up on low b12. I am not feeling much difference since starting injections and in fact have been signed off work with stress...feeling low and crying easily . Has anyone else experienced this type of problem or is it something else. Thank you

Hi,

I have been having b12 injections now for nearly 18 months and no matter what I do or don't I always flare up with really bad acne after a injection. Not just on my face but all over my back too. Your mood level is most definitely effected with b12 deficiency! I always tell when I'm due an injection as I tend to become extremely emotional and moody. Even with the injections I still struggle with my mood and emotions which is because I have been discovered to have a lot more than just a b12 deficiency so I would ask to have your folate tested if it hasn't already? Hope you feel better soon!

Thank you for your reply ...it's reassuring to know that it's not just me with acne at my age. Will try and get folate tested also. I am also seeking counselling/therapy to help me deal with stress

I get the spots after injecting too - quite odd at age 60! I also have the hypothyroid syndrome and have been on a roller coaster this year trying to sort myself out. The best I can say is that it doesn't seem to be straightforward. B12, vit D and thyroxine def helped me move towards normal but if i overextend myself too much I'm back in bed with a sore throat, splitting headache and utter exhaustion. It seems to be some sort of combined auto immune syndrome and I'm starting to think I have to learn to live with it, pace myself, be much more careful with my 'battery' than I've been used to doing in my life. I'm fit and active but dreams of climbing in the Lake District have taken a back seat for now. Disappointing but who knows what will happen in the next few years (I'm only a year or two in to diagnosis and treatment).

Good luck with your symptoms.

I got very spotty in my hairline when I first started on B12 injections, but mostly the spots have gone. Just so you know there's light at the end of that particular tunnel!

I also get quite anxious when I'm due a B12 jab; it seems to be quite a common (if weird) symptom.

Thank you ..it's reassuring to know that the spots may go and thst I can go back to using my makeup. Now I just need to sort my stress levels and stop crying then I might be able to function properly !

Huge hugs! You'll get lots of support on here. Fingers crossed that the B12 starts to help you feel better very soon (crying is so bad for mascara ;)) x

Thank you and have to agree about the mascara. At moment that's all I use so I go to work ...I cry ...mascara runs ...they send me home ...not a great plan! Trying to get some kind of emotional support because of the amount of stress I am under. Not just my issues but I support my husband who has cancer (2nd time)... next plan waterproof mascara then maybe I will manage not to appear a complete wreck when I attempt to return to work AGAIN!

Are you in the UK, Marianjones54? Ask your GP if you can have a referral to a Counsellor to help with your mood. Or ask if there's a Macmillan Counsellor in the centre where your husband is having treatment (cancer centres generally recognise that the whole family needs support, not just the patient).

And be kind to yourself - all this stress will be really exhausting and you need to give yourself permission to have less than perfect concentration, mood and ability to hold in the tears. You wouldn't be Superwoman even if your were physically well yourself; just do what you can do, and make sure you're pursuing your own wellbeing too x

Thank you ...have contacted Macmillan waiting for call back. Also have numbers given to me by GP will ring but find making the calls difficult . Oh yes I am in Uk

Sorry I haven’t read any replies so someone probably already told you this.

The sposts are from B12 injections, they do get a lot better over time, few months.

Low B12 also causes low mood and depression symptoms or make depression worse if you already have it. The weather doesn’t help either.

Remain positive, keep busy and also get good rest.

You will notice a lot of difference with B12 injections but it just takes time. Maybe couple of months depending on how low and your symptoms.

It’s recommended to take Folic Acid daily if you’re injecting, normally 400ug tablet daily.

You can ask your doc about Folic Acid. Also Vit D and iron shouldn’t be low.

Wish you well.
