Has anyone had acne/oily skin due to b12 deficiency?

Hiya I just wondered if anyone had experienced acne or oily skin as a symptom of b12 deficiency? I know the acne can be a side effect of the injections but I'm still battling with the gp to get any injections as of yet due to raising my b12 serum level with sublinguals (166 Apr, 915 Aug). My serum TSH was 0.97 in Apr and 1.4 in Aug (0.4-5.5) so the GP didn't seem to offer any explanations!! Just wondered if anyone elses experiences could shed any light on it? Thanks x

I had problems with oily skin (fluctuating with time of the onth) but they disappeared when my B12 levels were under control again.

suggest that you post on TUK about the thyroid (particularly if you are on medication) as normal range doesn't entirely apply in relation to TSH after treatment with levo ... assuming that you were hypothyroid ....

Thanks for your reply. It gives me hope that perhaps if I can get my B12 levels treated I might stop looking like an oil slick every few hours :( I have not received any diagnosis of any sort they just keep testing my TSH as my GP believes my B12 was only a little low at 166 so there must be something else causing the acne, oily skin, itchy scalp, fatigue, muscle twitches amongst other symptoms.

Hi Dcs88....I read somewhere that acne sometimes occurs with too much b12 but not sure

How much is too much?

Hey, it probably comes from your sublinguals because I had acne everywhere from B12 oral pills ;)

I had read that higher levels of b12 can cause acne but mine started appearing about 6 months before I took the sublinguals which is why I'm still puzzled 😕 I hope yours cleared as it's certainly not a nice side effect to deal with x

What is classed as a high level?

I have had real bad acne for several years, but I am unsure whether it's due to b12 issues, I have recently had my first loading doses, and going onto 3 monthly injections, but it was only through this forum I started to work out what was going on, firstly I've had quite a few general anaesthetics and secondly I've always had stomach problems, so I'm now on omeprazole for excessive stomach acid after suffering with an internal bleeding, but I had pins and needles for years before all of these problems, so I believe the tablets and the gas used in anaesthetics can cause b12 problems, and I'm still suffering with the acne, I think my problem has now gone beyond the point of no repair, as the pins and needles are still here, so I believe intake or digestive problems are a major cause of PA , but everyone is different, hopefully you'll get plenty of replies in your quest to answer your questions, thanks

Thank you for sharing your experience. I'm sorry to hear that you're still suffering with the pins and needles. It does seem that the b12 can take a long time to repair the nerve damage so hopefully this improves for you. I have learnt far more from the people here than any GP! I am seeing some improvements topically with differin cream but obviously this does not improve the internal issue and I continue to keep the blotting powder companies in business!

Having oily skin is not something anyone favours but there are several home remedies available that can help regulate the oil secretion and maintain a balance. Given that you are tired of dealing with the excess oil, opting for these remedies can help.
