Could Lipitor or Arthritis be stopping my B12 from working

Hi does anyone know if Lipitor for high cholesterol affect their B12 injection?

My GP took me off it for 2 weeks and also did a blood test for arthritis in the meantime. I have gone from managing on B12 injection 6 weekly to 2weekly in 9 months . Recently my hands swell at night time along with familiar tingling when I need my B12. Any feedback greatly appreciated :)

Lipitor is a statin and a lot of statins have been reported to inhibit B12 - there appear to have been a significant number of reports of interactions reported in the US, though it isn't clear from the link below exactly what the nature of the interactions was

Statins also inhibit VitD - as cholesterol is needed to metabolise the suns rays on the skin into VitD. Taking a statin blocks this very important action in the body and LOW VitD leads to so many conditions - not least many cancers.

The new generation of Statins now include VitD - I wonder why ? Dr Myhill mentions the only positive effect of a statin is - it's similarity to VitD in that it lowers inflammation. As we all know from Dr Kendrick - the true cause of heart disease is - inflammation :-)

Thanks for reply & link Gambit62. . That's interesting re: a lot of statins affecting B12. hopefully GP has a solution next week as cholesterol issue is genetic & I practice a low fat diet & excercise already. thanks again.

For sure. If you are taking lipitor or any of those statins (and there are other medications that destroy Vit B) then you would need to supplement your vitamin b12 by a method that bypasses the gut, such as by inserting a high potency B12 sublingual tab between cheek and tongue until it dissolves. Your doctor should be aware of how lipitor and other statins interfere with VitB absorption and you could show him alerts, but is it worth arguing with him/her?

Thanks Astridnovo, just to clarify do mean supplement a high potency B12 sublingual tab in addition to B12 injection ?

Either the high potency B12 between cheek and gum OR the B12 injection.

In the event of arthritis, chronic inflamation, ferritin levels need to be at least 100.

I did not know this when beginning b12 injections so wasnt concerned about my ferritin/iron because my level was 70.

After feeling better but then getting worse wirh b12 injections and many other supplements, i finally started supplimenting iron and felt better.

Thanks KimberinUS

I am awaiting blood test results for arthritis & hoping it's not that though my left foot is painful also since last Nov especially with impact ( jogging or dancing which I was doing to help with high cholesterol... can't win)

But thanks for info on ferritin good to know if it is arthritis & not the statin.

Please note: not all statins seem to adversly affect B12 - some seem to help B12

Which ones? Where is the evidence?

if you wish to discuss this further then suggest you start a new thrread. I researched statins a few years ago and no longer have the links that I used at the time.
