Hydrocortisone

I am injecting B12 and have been advised to have a 2 week course of hydrocortisone tablets. Can anyone explain why. I was diagnosed with MS with obvious demyelination on MRI.

Hi toph. Hydrocortisone belongs to a group of drugs called corticosteroids (steroids).

Corticosteroids are used in a wide range of medical conditions to reduce inflammation, reduce the severity of symptoms, and speed recovery from disease 'flare' or acute phases. They also suppress the immune system so combat autoimmune reactions in the body (its thought - but not know for certain - that MS may be an autoimmune condition).

It's quite common to give a short course of steroids in order to combat a disease 'flare' or to reduce troublesome or ongoing symptoms. It would be usual for a doctor to reasses a persons clinical condition following completion of the course and then determine whether further treatment is necessary.

Steroids are used in quite a wide range of medical conditions, including multiple sclerosis.
