Diet and Exercise for BD

Hi,

I am newly diagnosed with BD and am looking for ways to help my symptoms at home as best I can. I have found that an anti-inflammatory diet may help so wondered if any one else has tried this and if so, was it successful?

Exercising is proving to be more and more difficult for me now. If anyone has tried other forms of exercise that has not taken its toll on the body, I would love for you to share your experiences.

Any other tips or advice would be much appreciated.

YES! honestly diet changed my life.

It’s overwhelming at first to have to pay attention to ingredients but it becomes so simple quickly.

Meat/fish (any herbs and evoo or coconut oil) a veggie (herbs and oil). Limit carbs to complex good ones like sweet potatoes, wild rice, even white potatoes are okay with this.

Avoid sugar. Bread. Pasta.

All the water. Aim for 100-150 Oz a day.

Our rule is to basically not eat anything out of a box or bag. We don’t buy organic (it doesn’t matter). Just Whole Foods.

As you heal, and it takes a long time for chronic inflammation to leave the body so be patient, you can start working in bread and limited sweets down the road. Honestly. I would be careful with that slippery slope. When craving something sweet, I go for pb. Fruit. Honey.

Ever since I cut sugar from my diet, I was able to get off my meds. It took about two years for me to work out. So be patient there too. Now I’m heavy weightlifting and have energy like unbelievable before. (I started this at 25, I’m 33 now.)

The supplements I highly recommend are vitamin d, a good multi strain probiotic like nexabiotic (amazon), a sublingual b complex.

I’m on ig where I post all my food- for ideas and recipes. @ bitterbiologist.

Be patient with yourself. Hopefully the good days will start to outweigh the bad ones!

Hi Roseer1,

This post has given me so much reassurance, thank you.

From your advice it sounds like I have started on the right track. I have cut out gluten, dairy, nuts (Behcet’s trigger apparently) sugar and red meat. I will then try and reintroduce some little bits at a later stage if I can. I already drink 2.5 litres of water a day so that’s positive .

I LOVE peanut butter so stopping the nuts is going to be difficult but definitely one of the first to reintroduce back in to my diet.

I completely understand that this will be a long journey but really hope that I can see some small changes along the way. I will follow your Instagram page now so thank you for the recommendation.

Keep a food journal. That helped me sooo much. As for the dairy nuts and red meat, they may or may not be triggers for you. Rememebr were all so unique when it comes to that.

But sugar has been proven inflammatory that’s one that doesn’t seem to help anyone.

I’m technically missing all my enzymes (sucrose intolerant and lactose intolerant yet I have zero issues with milk and dairy) I actually drink milk to calm my stomach down. So just keep that in mind, we all just work a bit diff 🤗. Here for any tips and recipes!

That’s true. Definitely plan to start to try and reintroduce some foods back in to find out my own individual triggers.

I will keep a diary, great idea.

There is a lot to think about and consider as I am just starting out on Thai food journey but hopefully it will become easier once I learn more about myself.

Swimming is the best exercise for me takes a lot of energy to actually get to the pool but it works for me
