Checking out at the grocery store

Just a comment about Costco. Really, in and out with the darn card and the receipt check. At the store I always try to get organized to reduce fumbling, but Costco is painful with having to show that card everywhere. I keep dropping the darn thing. Fumbling, people getting irritated, grrrrrrrrrrrr

I feel sure you are often kept waiting at supermarket checkouts by other people.

It seems nowadays we are all under such pressure to move along the queue.

Ignore what other people think, Probably one of the reasons you end up fumbling is you feel under pressure.

I usually do my supermarket shop at a quiet time in that way I can take my time.

Why should we worry what other people think?

just a thought as I am always looking for ways to make things easier for my husband. How about attaching the card to a clip and either clip it to a bracelet or a pocket and show it that way.My husband has a card that says he has PD if you have one attach that as well ,it's suprising how peoples attitude changes when they realise you have a genuine condition.

I agree though ,just take your time think of yourself and ignore the others in the queue.

Yes in NYC after 9/11 most people were required to wear ID at all times. SO it was easy to acquire the ID holders that you wear around your neck. I had my card in there "I am not intoxicated. I have Parkinson's". If you can find one, you could put your Costco card in it. My daughter got me a pocket book that I can hang around my neck and it has a display that I can put my Metrocard and just flash it when boarding the bus with my walker. good luck and have fun

Also there are the larger ones that you can wear in the airport that are big enough to hold your passport.

I recently read about one woman who simply looks at the impatient person and says, "Yes I get frustrated by my Parkinson's too." I think a smile at that stage would help too.

When I am having trouble walking and someone stares,I say I'm just doing the

Parkie shuffle. I really hate the stares but I am trying to overcome it and make

a joke.

I just wanted to say you are all sooo brave and I admire you all!! My husband won't go anywhere alone. I have to do these things for him. He is sooo ashamed of his PD shuffle and fumbling. He has to learn to accept it. I pray that someday he does. I wish he would read these posts but he won't.

Anyway, I just wanted to say you are all great examples for the others!! :-)

Does Costco make home deliveries? I have my groceries delivered by Vons Pavilions through the Internet. It may cost a little more but it's worth it to me.

I usually use a riding cart in any "big box" store... I just don't have walking stamina required for a place that big. It also helps if I'm having difficulty getting to an item (like in the freezers or refrigerators, where opening a door to get at things can be difficult) b/c more often than not someone will ask if they can help.

I am practicing the line "yes this Parkinson's frustrates me too!" It's a good one for my stage, not as obvious yet, just slow and fumbly.
