Calf pain

I was diagnosed in October 2018. Started taking sinimet 25/100 3x daily shortly thereafter. Helped with right leg resting tremor. I also have sensations/tightness/pain in my right calf down through three toes. Nerve testing has shown normal results. I’m just wondering if anyone else has experienced similar calf, ankle, foot discomfort and if you’ve found anything that helps. I had a normal CT scan and have been referred for an MRI. This is my first question on this forum and look forward to hearing from others.

I have no idea. There's really no telling. I think you're stuck with trial and error.

That said, might be some form of dystonia or peripheral neuropathy or both or a special malady PD has visited on you. When I don't take my supplements, I get calf cramps at night, but when I do, I don't. For cramps, some think vitamin D deficiency contributes, some think B complex will help, & some think magnesium would help. I take all three. :)

Thanks. I appreciate your thoughts on this.

A quick way to tell if magnesium deficiency might be an issue is to use magnesium chloride oil aka mag oil or MO. Spray lightly directly on the area of discomfort when it is bothering you and spread it around with your hand and allow to dry. If it helps, you may be deficient in magnesium. It is useful for different types of pain or muscle tightness. It can help relax muscles and help alleviate sprains. It can also help with arthritis pain. It will relieve leg and muscle cramps in a minute or two. It is well and easily absorbed through the skin so it will add to your total magnesium intake. It can also help you relax for sleep when applied to the back and sides of the neck, chest area and upper back and shoulders. A person carries a lot of muscle tension in these areas that can prevent you from falling asleep normally. Its muscle relaxing effects help relax these muscle groups allowing sleep to come more easily. Here is a typical product on Amazon :

An 8 ounce spray bottle will last a good amount of time and will be more than enough to allow you to test it for everything you might use it for. Read some of the rating reviews on Amazon to get a better idea of what people use it for successfully.

If it is mostly a pain issue, this product may be of more use :

Toe curling slowly snuck up on me. Before I knew it they were a little deformed and paining. Lotion massage and silicone toe separators from Amazon have helped.

I concur with everything chartist said. My husband has had pain in his buttock, calves and ankles for years. Doctors thought it was caused by spinal stenosis for which he had many steroid injections to no avail. He ended up having a back op 18 months ago on which he was pinning all his hopes. It made no difference, in fact it made the pain worse due to scar tissue potentially pressing on a nerve. After trying several pain killers with several side effects, he's now settled on a small dose of Pregabalin & fentanyl pain patch.

He was diagnosed 16 years ago and has since developed peripheral neuropathy.

He takes all the usual supplements ie Vitamin D, B complex, high dose thiamine, Alpha Lipoic Acid, etc. but the magnesium oil seems to really help (thanks Art)

g & g,

What was the back surgery he had? Did they fuse vertebrae?

No Marc, he had a discectomy and decompression without the fusion

Hi miller15,I was diagnosed May 2012 and have had calf numbness through to my feet and toes on both sides, off and on over the ensuing years. My left is my Parkinson's affected side. The past few months I have back pain on my right side causing a numbness on my right leg, which comes on upon standing up from reclining or sitting and wraps itself with a tingling around my knee. Assuming some nerve is being compressed.

B-12 deficiency can cause this sort of pain/numbness. Easy blood test can determine levels. I'd have D levels checked at the same time. I read that gluten can cause this as well; my neurologist confirmed that celiac's disease can do so, but would not go as far as saying gluten intolerance could, as he does not believe in gluten intolerance, but I have been eating gluten-free for over six months and it helped with calf/foot numbing.

My latest tingling I attribute to muscular imbalance (from Parkinson's) causing something to press on a nerve. I used to go to the acupuncturist regularly pre-covid and will return (after a year's lapse) once I get my second vaccine. Meanwhile PT (home visits) has helped a lot.

I agree with chartist on magnesium, which I lather on my arms and legs liberally to sleep. After going through a number of brands, I like this one best. amazon.com/gp/product/B07SR...

A little more expensive but has a better texture (non-greasiness) than others I've tried.

Thanks for sharing your story PDGal4. Hope you are having a good day. I’ve had my blood levels checked. My gp says nothing out of the ordinary but I’ve yet to review results with my neurologist. I also have an MRI booked in March. I will go back to an acupuncturist. That’s a good suggestion. I do get some relief from voltaren which I use at night. I will try the magnesium rub, and keep you posted. Good to know their are others out there dealing with similar issues.
