Chronic Illness Associated with Mold and Mycotoxins: Is Naso-Sinus Fungal Biofilm the Culprit?

“A recent study of mold exposed patients (n = 25) with a variety of systemic symptoms was presented [63]. The vast majority of the patients were positive for mycotoxins in the urine. The patients were treated with intranasal amphotericin B with or without systemic antifungals which represented biofilm focused therapy. The patients were monitored before and after treatment. Ninety per cent of the patients had a dramatic decrease in their systemic symptoms, including neurological conditions of tremor, ataxia and vertigo, among others [63].”

Along this line of thinking, Xlear Nasal Spray may be of benefit as well as oral Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE), both of which have antibiofilm effects as well as antifungal, antiviral and antibacterial activity. Xlear Nasal Spray also has xylitol in it which has antibiofilm effects also and has also shown effectiveness against Covid-19 as I wrote about here:

I thought this was Interesting - as it causes causes ataxia, tremor, one of the case studies had edema in sinuses . Sounds like some PD symptoms.

I have bought some of X-clear a while back. Does it kill good bacteria too? Our natural dr says GSE can and may not be pure.

You can use the seeds themselves for the same effect if you are concerned about purity.

GSE and Olive Leaf Extract (OLE) are 2 very potent antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral and antibiofilm agents that are very important in their antifungal and antibiofilm activities because they are safer than prescription antifungals which are noted for their severe side effects, especially in longer term use which is often needed to overcome fungal infections.

Do you think oral olive leaf extract would help with sinus fungus? I have some of that too.

Yes, I believe it will.

Right, I will start on these straight away. I think it might explain my head weird sensation of liquid in my head and weird taste in my mouth too. We have both worked on renovations of old building in the past. And we both have high ochratoxin results. Mine are much higher than his even. GP has no idea about the mycotoxin tests or results and appears to disregard it.

Here is a discussion by Dr. Hoffman on OLE :

You have to keep some perspective on GSE in comparison to oral antifungals which can have severe side effects. Any supplement may not be 100% pure, but in perspective the prescription oral antifungals have some severe side effects. Here is a couple of examples of those side effects which include liver damage and liver disease :

True, good point

Melatonin may have protective effects against OTA via its highly potent antioxidant effects, which may be useful while OLE and or GSE are at work against OTA.

europepmc.org/article/med/3...

Melatonin is noted for its very good safety profile in animals and humans.

I sometimes have 5mg at bedtime. Does it need to be more?

I see studies using just 3 mg showing benefit. The PwP study used 10 mg and showed significant benefit in 12 weeks. I currently have been at 106 mg for just over 3 1/2 months. Some studies have used even more, but not everyone can tolerate melatonin so testing at low dose is probably useful to find out if you tolerate melatonin or not.

I am probably not a good one to follow because I will test higher doses of melatonin based strictly on its known safety profile.

Dr Laurie Mischley says most of her PD patients test very high for Ochratoxin A. I do.

I do too and I don’t have PD , I’m the caregiver. Maybe you could try some of Arts suggestions above.

Interesting, thank you. I have a bottle of Higher Nature Citricidal Grapefruit Seed Extract which I just bought to help oral health but haven't yet opened. I started using a general detox support (Kirkman's) some time ago which contains some Olive Leaf Extract and have noticed that the one fungal toe nail that I have had for 10 years is growing almost normally again! I had no idea that it was a standard 'alternative' treatment.

Biocare do a GSA too - this page (mainly on candida) includes Biocare's general instructions for use (nasal, topical etc)
