Can I give my dad Mucinex nightshift cold and flu if he has Parkinsons and takes carbidopa/levodopa?

I have given him Mucinex but don't know if this is the same and is ok to take.

I believe regular mucinex is okay but I seem to recall that dextromethorphan is an issue for PWP. I’m not 100% sure and I’m unfamiliar with the antihistamine listed. I recommend you do an internet search on it.

If you are unsure, ask the pharmacist or his MDS. I do not rely on internet searches when I have a specific question as you have. Better to err on the side of caution.

Drugs.com has a good medication interaction database. For carbidopa levodopa:

drugs.com/drug-interactions...

In the case of Mucinex cold and flu one needs to check the interaction for each of the active ingredients which are:

Acetaminophen 650 mg

Dextromethorphan HBr 20 mg

Triprolidine HCl 2.5 mg

None of these appear in the drugs.com database of interactions with carbidopa levodopa. Of course it does not hurt to check with your pharmacist.

There is a time-release version of Mucinex which has guaifenesin alone. I find it doesn't have any noticeable side-effects and is well-tolerated.
